... was focused around Exploration, Interpersonal Relations and Ethical Debates.
Yeah, Star Trek almost didn't get on the air in the first place because it had too much of that and not enough explosions and stuff.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Don't be silly, you should go watch or rewatch some Star Trek episodes, of some of them do. I am surprised someone on this sight didn't know that there were explosions in "old" or real Star Trek. They do a great job of accenting the story usually.

The first Movie is not really Star Trek like and the second isn't measuring up to be either.
They said that about Wrath of Khan in '82. Just read "Indiana Skywaker Meets the Son of Star Trek" in Best of Trek #7.

In just the first nine minutes of Into Darkness, we meet new aliens on a strange new world, which Kirk and crew are saving from extinction.

One could also argue that Earth is a "strange new world" in Trek. 45 years and all we've ever seen is a couple of military installations and sleepy back streets. I want to see what life is like for those who aren't quasi-military space explorers in the 23rd century.

I wasn't.

No, I don't have to do that. I've seen them all already and know what's in them.

That's your opinion, which I beg to differ. Star Trek '09 was pure Star Trek, bringing back the original characters and all the fun of TOS, but with a new cast and an incredibly larger budget.

You, like the rest of us, have no clue what this movie is about. Maybe you should wait and actually watch the film in May before passing judgment on it.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Shatner's comments are obviously a joke on his part, and I imagine Abrams took them as such too. There's nothing to see here, people.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

No he's not.

Honestly, I doubt he ever wanted a part in any Abrams film. He's having too much fun hanging with the fans and making docs.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

both of which are essentially action movies.
... pffft.

That made me laugh thanks. You have quite a sense of humor.

The action did accent the story of those movies well though. They did go a bit overboard on First Contact though, the dialog made up for though.

TWOK is an action movie. That was the point, Paramount wanted a cheap action movie so that they could recover from the damage done by TMP.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Beg to take issue with you. The battle scenes between the Enterprise and the Reliant were the idea of Nick Meyer, director of the film. Paramount, or rather Harve Bennett, liked it. But there was no insistance from the studio on a battle scene at all.

No. The style may have been Meyer's idea, but you're being naive if you think the studio didn't have an X-plosion preference.

When Harve Bennett was first approached by Paramount they asked him his opinion on TMP. He said he thought it was boring. They asked if he thought he could do better. When he said yes, they added "can you do it for less than forty fucking million dollars?" Bennett said he could do six movies with that much money and got the job.

A cheap action movie, that's what Paramount wanted and what they got.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Shatner's just mad that Abrams is winning at geek Monopoly. Shatner must have landed on his hotel.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Shatner has nothing to worry about, he's a living legend. JJ can't say that and if he rolls out a few clunkers in a row he's screwed.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

like most jokes there is some kernel of truth...

Who told you that? 'Taint so and ain't the point.

Oh, I beg to differ my friend. The Shat is annoyed with JJ, no doubt in my mind.

No he's not.

Honestly, I doubt he ever wanted a part in any Abrams film. He's having too much fun hanging with the fans and making docs.

There is a big difference between a joke and an insult.
Shatner went way beyond the former into the territory of the latter.

That said, I'm not surprised his fans are trying to excuse his words; inevitably, the excuses are transparently feeble.

Re: William Shatner Calls J.J. Abrams "a Pig" for Hogging Both Star Tr

Yeah, you tell 'em. Who said Treknerds have no sense of humor, huh?

Oh, that was me.

Shatner didn't say anything different than what was said in a dozen threads here when the news came out, also with humour.

Ah, yes - those threads where outraged fans vented their anger at the news, only to be opposed by fans welcoming the news.
You can tell right away who is joking in those threads and who doesn't care one way or the other (they're a minority).

What Shatner said - about an acquaintance, not a close friend - is not a joke.
Regardless of how explicit or implicit you try to make this assumption in transparent attempts to excuse him.
