I belong to google alert for various Trek related stuff. and every now and then I spot an article/video I think might interest you. I wanted to share this one with you. I think the older Bill Shatner has gotten the more philosophical he has become.

Oh, he's absolutely right. The way things are going, it is possible that humanity won't see the 23th century, or if we do it will be more like Mad Max rather than Star Trek.

Remember that it took things getting about as bad as they could get, with another (third) world war, before we even started on the way to that Trek future. Roddenberry etc never thought humanity would just sort of naturally get nicer and more reasonable.

That's exactly correct! Incinerating ourselves was unique enough an experience to soften our collective tone a bit, apparently. And even then, it's not like the Human race had some epiphany and got its shit together. No. Vulcans, it turns out, had to hand-hold our species and spoon-feed us the proper way to live and grow.
