William Leisner on "Losing the Peace"

Number one reason not to name him "Jack":

This is the trek universe. Jack Crusher might not always be dead.

Speaking of names, are we going to have to wait until Junior's born to find that out, or are we going to be getting some idea of what they're going for in LTP?

William, I'm really excited about the book now. I'd been a bit frightened of the path it might take, but your interview's really put my mind at ease. It sounds like it's going to be great! I've got my copy on pre-order and I can't wait!

I hope the allusions to Jack mean that she's finally burying his ghost once and for all. I understand and appreciate the history with Jack, but it's time to move on.
Curious comment, since I believe Beverly had moved on well before we met her at Farpoint Station. Remember, she was the one who requested to serve under Picard on the E-D, and Jean-Luc who balked, projecting his uneasiness onto her. And, without pulling my DVD with "Attached" out right now, I'm pretty sure Picard was the only one who used Jack as an excuse for having never pursued the relationship. Meanwhile, Beverly was getting busy with Trills and ghosts, and acting for all the world like she'd finished mourning a decade or so earlier.

In light of what you said in the interview Bill, I don't understand what you are getting at here.

According to the interview you said: "Beverly Crusher also gets a major storyline as she takes a special assignment to investigate a refugee camp that's starting ot overwhelm its guest world," he reveals, "and we also get a closer examination of the personal tragedy that had most shaped her life: the death of her first husband, Jack."

Just wondering how you square the two.

I have explained repeatedly why I think it'd be "creepy" to name their son "Jack."

No, you have not. You've repeated a fact -- that they would be naming their son after Beverly's deceased first husband -- and called that your explanation without actually explaining why it's creepy.

If you are this contentious every time you encounter an opinion with which you disagree, you must not be much fun at parties. Have a terrific night.

Welcome to the Internet and the TrekBBS.

And you have yet to provide a logical explanation for why naming the child after the deceased first husband is "creepy."

Must 'creepiness' have a logical origin? Fear is often irrational, or the response to a real danger disproportionate to its probability, and something like disquiet can be expected to function along similar, emotive pathways. Creepiness seems like it's a rather subjective experience; what unsettles one might not bother another.

Still, while I don't find the idea of a Jack Picard-Crusher upsetting, I don't find it challenging to consider why others might. Naming the boy after a deceased person, particularly one close to the family, summons the memory of that person and superimposes the dead on the living. It's a minor but, I think, legitimate expression of the uncanny. The association--via names--between the animate and inanimate is a sometimes device in Gothic fiction. Trek certainly isn't that, Janeway's holoprograms aside, but I can see how it might inform an eerie reaction to finding out the kid was named for a deceased, prior husband.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

But hasn't Bain_Sidhe already provided you with this:

I just think the specific history there would make it very weird to name their son after Jack - it's not like he's an old family friend. Sure, it's an old tradition to name kids after loved friends/family members, but Jack's not just any old friend or family member. He was Beverly's first *husband*. How many kids are named after their mom's first husbands? Who just so happened to be their father's best friend - while Mom was married to said first husband? It'd just be really awkward, for all involved.

Put me down for creepy - maybe they will give the kid PJs like the old Star Trek uniforms and then it will claim to be the reincarnation of Jack.

I think it would be cool if JLP and Beverly named the baby after Picard's brother, Robert. They could always use Jack as a middle name. Or maybe they'll name him William...:)

...am I right to assume that they are having a boy? I thought it was said in one the books or in an interview, but I could be wrong. If the baby is a girl then it's a whole new ball game. Tasha has already been taken...Yvette maybe? (after Picard's mum)

Perhaps that last sentence is a little confusing? Beverly's major storyline is her mission to the refugee camp. The examination of her past tragedy is one element that comes into play during the refugee camp storyline, but I wouldn't say that examination was a major focus.

Hopefully that'll make more sense when the book comes out.

Oh, and let me add this, too:

As has been mentioned previously, LtP takes place between the end of Destiny (February 2381) and A Singular Destiny (April 2381). GTTS established that Beverly and Jean-Luc had conceived in mid-December 2380. So, no, Junior will not be making his appearance in LtP.

As for the name, I think they should do like they did on Mad About You, and just leave the child nameless for several books, until sweeps month or a hardcover release.

Nah they're going to encourage the kid to pick its own name, only for it to try a couple, get bored and go with "Joe" when it's 33...

Interesting interview. Can't wait to get LoP either. Been waiting for the next TNG book to come out and its been worth the short wait.
It is sad to be losing the ebooks through. I have been slowly collecting the Slings and Arrows series. Just got 3 books left to get. I was hoping it would have been on the list for next year's releases. Oh well..

That said, I hope the allusions to Jack mean that she's finally burying his ghost once and for all. I understand and appreciate the history with Jack, but it's time to move on.

As the song goes:

"Hit the road Jack and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more"

It's just occurred to me that if the Picard child is named "Data," then his inevitable getting-together with Tasha Riker will be absolutely perfect.

Or they could just give him a model number that seems strangely fitting (and, I suppose you could say, a simultaneous tribute to BSG and Will Riker): call him "Number One."

They could name him Wesley. It's not as if the first Wesley shows up very often. The guy manipulates time and space. He can't bother to visit more than every few years.

I have a strong feeling the kid will either have a first or middle name in honor of Picard's deceased young nephew, Rene (don't know how to add the accent on the last 'e').
