That's probably because nobody believes or trusts them any more. The sheer fact that they thought any of this was a good idea at any time was enough to taint the whole brand for this upcoming generation. Their backpeddle lacked a certain required amount of contrition and I doubt they'll be able to truly recover any time soon. Maybe someday they'll figure it out...

But not today.

Xbox's backtracking doesn't seem to have had much effect.

Anyone ?
I'm willing to consider purchasing an Xbox One now, having all but completely written it off in the aftermath of E3, but my preference still lays with the PS4. All other things being equal, Sony still did the right thing with their DRM policies and forced MS into doing the same, and I feel they deserve my custom for that. The PS4 allegedly being more powerful and cheaper is icing on the cake.

Oh, and they don't put Netflix/Youtube/the rest of the internet behind a paywall like MS do, and that is a decently sized factor for me when choosing my next-gen console.

I have had seven xbox 360 since launch because of the RROD, but i gave them the benefit of the doubt because the 360 had some really good games, but after the BS hey just tried to pull on all us gamers with all that "keep the publsiher happy, up your gamers" DRM, i would not touch a X1 if you paid me, i simply dont trust them not to at some future stage, turn all that DRM back on when they decided enough people have invested too much to simply drop it all.

And I bet you when the X1 launches somewhere, deep in the T&C of some update will be the ability for MS to switch it all back on when they want to.

Even if they do, there's no way they can require that functionality on existing discs (without banning all previous discs from working). Just stop buying new games at that point. :techman:

I would not put this by for MS to do again, switch on their DRM and all the disc's you have will then require that mandatory install to the HDD to run, just as they intented to do from the beginning, all that promised DRM is still there built into the machine, it's just sitting dormant.

Microsoft is going to add these things little by little, step by step now, and that way customers will slowly accept all of it. And then it's the frog in boiling hot water effect. If you put the frog in cold water and then boiling hot water, it jumps out immediately. If you put it in cold water and then slowly start to boil it, it will stay in the water until its dead.

Unless Microsoft is willing to pay vastly inflated manufacturing costs, there won't be anything unique on the disc to identify it. It would have to be some sort of included one-use-code in the box. And why would they pay to print those if they're not scheduled to be used?

The one time code would be in the game disc itself buried in the softwear of the game, the mandatry install to play the game from the HDD would copy that code over onto the HDD with the game and link that code to your X1 and your account, the mandatory connection to the internet to install the game was to link that disc code to your account and store that info onto their xblive service, so then if your gave the disc to a friend they could not intstall it to the HDD without that mandatory internet conenction, and once you had that the mandatory internet connection xblive would see that game disc was already in use.

But it's telling that MS have said all this DRM will be turned off, but when you buy a X1 you will still require that one time mandatroy internet connection to deactivate these features before you can use the thing, that tells me that even though they are turning these features off, they are still going to continue to build the Xbox One with these features intact on the hardwear.

If that's not sounding alram bells for what they have planned the future i dont know what is.

Oh, sure, they can always turn it on again at a moment's notice - it's always there, lurking under the surface. In fact, I bet there will be a clause in the Xbox One Live EUL fine print that says that you may be subject to those "features" at any time they see fit as they may be turned on without prior notice or consent.

[Kirk]Don't believe them! Don't trust them![/Kirk]

If any MS CEO or person in charge ever actually reactivates the initially planned DRM system after the XBO has established itself and broadened the install base they should give back their business diploma.

It would be the equal to putting a gun to your head and pulling the trigger. No one would ever believe them anything again and they'd destroy customer trust for a very long time, maybe for all time. Hell, their disastrous E3 appearance nearly sunk the ship before it even had a chance to be played by the consumer.

These are big issues and since Sony so masterfully pissed on their shoes they are cornered.. they had to abandon their plans or risk falling back from day one when both consoles are released.

So their DRM version is gone for good.. the market has spoken and MS was forced to blink. They may try some other stuff but they'll be extremely cautious not to get put into the negative spotlight again.

Yeah, if they ever did that, you can bet that people would be throwing their XBones out the window. That's taking advantage of the customers that have put their trust in them and nobody would be able to trust them again. Kind of like how the boy cried wolf. Bridges can be built, but they can also be burnt down. The company's credibility as a whole would take a heavy hit. MS seemed to think that the issues were small ones, that they could be swept under a rug when in reality they're big issues to the consumer, those that would be using their console and I think that the company as a whole needs to look at these issues and the outcomes, as I think the company as a whole could learn a lot from what happened to benefit them in the future. Because at a certain point, it's not just about the XBone, but about what the market will bear for any future policies the company should enact in the future, whether it be with the XBone or Windows. Microsoft is a big company, and many smaller companies are watching the big ones as they're often the ones that set a precedent for the future.

The reason it's a day one update is because the thing comes out in November and they still have to develop and test the new software while the system is in production. I imagine the launch software is already locked or in the final stages.

Kind of makes me wonder just who IS buying the xbox one?

It's still top 3 on amazon after a month, so obviously a lot of people are getting it.

Perhaps people are just too scared to admit it online for fear of being torn apart by rabid fanboys?

Yeah but does the PS4 not have pre-order sales spread over 4 bundles, compared to the one xbox one bundle.

Yes the PS4 bundles currently sit in 16th, 27th, 31st and 52nd place while the only XB1 sits in 3rd.

Obviously combined the PS4 will probably be ahead, although that said obviously 16th spot is a fair few less than 3rd, and the lower ones will be way, way less, so i doubt the difference is that much.

But still, who are these people buying the XB1? I'd like to meet one of them, i'd like to shake their hand just to know they really exist because from everything you see online there is NOBODY buying one.

Just seems strange, I think people have been put of "admitting" they bought one for shame of losing "coolness points" or something

I assume this is on the US Amazon, on the UK one the PS4 is 4, X1 is 14th, and i think we only have the one pS4 bundle over here at present.
