Will we (finally) see...

Re: We'll we (finally) see...

My guess: no. Not unless people just decide for himself he's gay (Lt. Hawk or, in fanfic, everyone).

There is way too much in this movie now. Spock and Kirk's family backstories, introducing all the new actors, time-travelling Romulans, for all I know there will be tribbles as well. (Hey there's a movie title for you: There Will Be Tribbles.)

Anyway, throwing a gay character at us too would just get absurd. They only have two hours!!!

Tribbles on a Shuttle. "Get these mother f*ing tribbles off this mother f*ing shuttle"

Re: We'll we (finally) see...

Spock will be gay from here on out. And I do mean "out." ;)

Noooo!! That cannot happen. That will crush my fantasies I've had since I was a teenager. Let's say he's bi. That should please all of us right?

It only takes 15 seconds of dialogue to indicate that a character is gay:

Setting: The Starfleet Officers' Club.
Lt. Kirk sees Lt. Bob Jones (a man) and walks up to him...

Lieutenant Kirk: Hi Jones-ey...It heard you and I are both assigned to the same ship.

Lieutenant Jones: It looks that way Jimmy.
(another man, Lt. John Smith, walks up and joins Lt. Jones)

Lieutenant Jones: Hi John -- Let me introduce you...Lieutentant Jim Kirk, this is my partner (or whatever word they will use in the 23rd century), Lieutenant John Smith.

Lieutenant Kirk: (shaking hands) Nice to meet you, Lieutenant Smith.

voila! A gay character. Then that's it...don't mention his sexual preference again in the film, just like I don't think it would be important to mention that Chekov, Uhura, or Sulu are heterosexual. The rest of Lt. Jones' part in the film can show him as a respected member of Starfleet who is just like all of the other officers.

EDIT: To add and clarify -- Sorry Belar, I submitted this post too early by accident and was editing it when
you quoted...

I think I'd like that scene. It doesn't really serve any purpose other than "Look! We have a gay character on Star Trek!" but I'm of the opinion that this would be reason enough to include the scene.

Re: We'll we (finally) see...

Or making it a bit more subtle:

just have a gay couple of semi-important characters (I don't think they would let anyone of the Big Seven be gay) kiss/make out in the background when they have a scene in the mess hall were Kirk and McCoy are talking about something.

I agree, Belar. Hopefully a real screenwriter can figure a way to not make the character the "Token Gay" just for the sake of having a gay character. The same goes for the Pakistani actor who may or may not be portraying a Muslim character.

My only point was to show that it can be done with very little screentime.

Re: We'll we (finally) see...

I just realised I made a huge error in the threadtitle :D
Whoops

We'll has to be will off course :)

It's funny how I didn't notice that until you mentioned it. I think my brain sometimes will correct mistakes like that without me even being consciously aware of it until someone points it out. I would have sworn the subject said "Will we (finally) see..." but sure enough, it is "We'll we". This is why I suck at proofreading.

Re: We'll we (finally) see...

Ysee, that's what I don't want. Drive-by gay character!

Hi there, my name is Steve and I like cock!

NOT the way to do it. :p

:guffaw:

Okay seriously people - are we being serious? Considering how sexless Star Trek traditionally is, the reason you can't introduce a gay character in an already packed to the gills two hour movie is because it would inevitably introduce a glaring aspect of SEX into the plotline where it really would just be a bizarre tonal shift that calls attention to itself for no good reason related to the main business of the movie, which is the plotline and introducing the characters.

The place to do it is in a TV series (which is really where Trek belongs, mainly). Then you have the luxury of time, and you can make it something other than about sex. It can be a character who has a certain relationship and maybe at first the audience doesn't know it's even a sexual one.

Trust me, trying to shoehorn a gay character into a five-second scene in this movie will just come off either tawdry and cheap, or painfully politically correct. Either way, it would be flatly horrible. Instead, campaign for Trek to go back to the small screen, which is the only place where characters can really be developed in a way that would serve a gay character well.

Hopefully a real screenwriter can figure a way to not make the character the "Token Gay" just for the sake of having a gay character.

A good screenwriter would know that nothing goes in the script that doesn't serve the needs of the story and the characters. There's nothing in ST XI that indicates it needs a gay character. It also doesn't need: A Volkswagon bug, a picnic basket, a palm tree, and a black velvet painting of Elvis. There are an infinite number of things is doesn't need, so why force the issue? To shoehorn something into a movie for any reason that is exterior to the movie will just look stupid and engender resentment. Do you really want that to be how ST's first gay character is introduced?

i'm trying to hold back my gay joke thoughts, but it's just not working...I think it would be an absolutely fabulous idea:)..ok, ok that's all. actually i don't care either way....*cough* sailors, ship,*cough*, oops there went another one sorry:guffaw:.....ok, one more get a Security guard(Cop), Chakotay (Native American), an Engineer( 23rd century construction worker )a caption(Sailor) and a Klingon? Re: We'll we (finally) see...

What is the deal with a gay character on Star Trek?
What is the deal with straight characters on Star Trek?

Throwing a gay character into any movie (not just Star Trek), just for the sake of having one in there, is lame. Heterosexuality was never flaunted as being the only acceptable orientation in ST. A gay relationship was just never explored.

I don't think this movie is the right time to start introducing new main characters, whether they're gay or straight. If they're going to have a gay character I'd rather it be a somewhat important role rather than just a token one.
TPTB have enough going on with casting new actors in already established iconic roles.

I fixed your thread title OP
