Will We Ever See The 1990s Star Trek Aesthetic Again? Or Hear that “humm” Sound When No One Speaks?

theyre still making merchandise with the tos designs though

Sure, but I was referring to the revision for 2017+ of production (not tie-in) continuity, while specifically not dismissing the near-certainty that other versions will exist in the future.

Both visual designs are canon. Nothing's been "overwritten."

Which is why I went to such trouble not to use the word ‘canon’ in connection with overwriting.

Yeah, this "overwriting" nonsense is just that - nonsense.

If it’s nonsense with respect to the current iteration of production continuity (not the canon), it means that a) none of the Talosian characters from “The Cage” appeared on DSC except in the “stylized flashback” b) if they did appear, they would be meticulously researched and recreated precisely or with near-invisible updates.

However, currently it’s debatable whether the character with the medallion who showed up on DSC was supposed to be the original Keeper, and the show didn’t seem interested in using both designs in order to suggest diversity (as with the Romulans on PIC).

It's true. Nothing's been overwritten. My old TOS DVDs haven't even been overwritten with the newer special effects.

This isn’t about your DVDs, but simply about the question whether ship’s phasers are consistently blue and blobs of light have actual ship designs in the latest revision of production continuity. If one of those ships were to appear on SNW, would it simply be updated like the Enterprise or would the designer ignore the TOS-R version altogether, arguing that “the ship used to be a blob”? I doubt they’d go that far.

Some say some shows look dated. How can they look dated, are we supposed to know what the future looks like? If a starship from 2367 looks exactly like something from late 80s then that's how it is.

Because the 80s had a look. I don't know what the future will look like so I'll this-it doesn't look comfortable or futuristic. It feels very disquieting to work or live in.

Too bad none of us will still be alive in 2151, when the earliest-set Star Trek takes place. I'd have loved to have seen reactions like "The Real World doesn't look anything like Star Trek! Real Life is a great big Canon Violation!" if we all made it.

Real life has been problematic for canon ever since we didn't have a Eugenics War in the 90s.

But who is to say that look might not come back someday? Things like fashion tend to go around in circles and return in some form. Perhaps 80s style will be back eventually.
Perhaps.

Regardless, it doesn't make TNG futuristic for me. Mileage will vary.

Fashion and style seem to have recurrence intervals on the order of decades, not centuries. Point to a recent clothing fad or aesthetic that echoes the 1600s. Also, the inclusion of alien cultures will irreversibly change things looks.

I don't think anything will be irreversible. Especially if humanity continues its nostalgia obsession as presented now.

But that's kind of the point. If we've lived among aliens from 200+ years, nostalgia will look nothing like the (pre-contact) 1980s.

It's not going to continue. Every new period is a direct reaction to the last. At one point, everything associated with the late-20th Century is going to be completely rejected. It's coming. It's just a matter of when. The driving force behind nostalgia is "today sucks!" Change that and people will be more interested in "right now" than trying to escape from it.

I highly doubt it.

True enough. I guess I am overwhelmingly fatigued by the insistence that "today sucks!" as though escaping in to some fictional universe somehow makes it all better. Yeah, I'm way to pragmatic for a lot of fan's tastes.

Sorry, my current today "sucks" in that I have a lot of stressors, both personal and work related. Star Trek is not a relief from that.
