Will Trekkies die out?

I'm gonna be honest I don't know overly much about Star Trek and I'm only young and grew up with Star Wars and most kids my age , younger and older as well like Star Wars but when I watched the cartoon series on tv I had never even heared of star trek but I did find it eventually but all of my friends I've asked haven't seen Star Trek besides the new movies which aren't really like the old series. So I was wondering how long will Trekkies last I mean there aren't any tv shows on for kids to watch Star Trek to me it seems like Star Wars will out pace Star Trek and it could die off D:

Trekkies have been around for almost 50 years, and Star Trek is more popular than ever. I don't see fans or fandom going away any time soon.

Even if you like the new movies, you're seriously going to argue they feel the same? All they have in common are the names of things. That's not a comment on the quality mind you, they're just very different feels.

Eventually, in the fullness of history, of course Trekkies will die out. I don't see it happen anytime soon though. There were Trekkies in the 80s before TNG even came back. Companies will still be looking to profit from the franchise and putting out new material, which will lead people back to the originals. And I don't know how old you are, but most of the biggest Trekkies I know including myself are in their 30s. That leaves 50 years our generation of Trekkies will live, and just because they won't be in the demo forever doesn't mean they won't still be out there, watching old Trek material on Netflix.

I mean one has space ships, sexy green aliens, laser guns, Kirk Judo, over-the-top, larger than life bad guys, and naïve, sophomoric philosophic mumbo-jumbo.

Depends on who you ask. Some fans, often older ones, have said it feels like TOS.

Depends on the series. TOS was an action adventure show. Most of the previous films were action films. Kids have "known" Star Wars since 1977. Two generations have grown up with Star Wars. Technically I was a kid when I saw it in 1977. Star Wars has always been more kid friendly with toys and cartoon shows, so it stands to reason kids will gravitate to it. That doesn't mean all other SF franchises will die off.

If they stop making movies and tv shows for a long time then the fandom might reduce a bit... but Star trek will have inspired other sci fi stuff, which will inspire more sci fi stuff and so on. A whole generation of gamers which may not have seen Star Trek have experienced Mass Effect.

Of course. Sooner or later the reboot series will produce a dud, then Star Trek is dead again. The market is a lot less forgiving than it once was.

Doctor Who is doing just fine these days despite a sixteen year gap which saw no new productions aside from one telemovie. And it's just been announced The X-Files will be returning to TV despite a thirteen year gap which saw no new productions aside from one movie. Star Trek's just taking a siesta at the moment. It's only been ten years since Enterprise went off the air and in that time we've had two movies with a third being developed. Star Trek will return to TV someday and will go on strong when it does.

The works of Shakespeare are still alive and well after 400 years, so that gives me hope. Classic television shows like The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, and The Twilight Zone are continually rediscovered by new audiences, so I see no reason why Trek won't continue to have a thriving fanbase in the future as well.

I think there's a tendency to think of the Trek franchise as dormant, especially since they aren't churning out TV episodes like they did 1987-2005, but I think it will continue to last.

The original *IS* a television classic.

But I do think Paramount ought to be considering putting SOMETHING Star Trek related on TV again for the simple reason that it keeps Trek in people's faces and in pop culture on a weekly basis.

No they won't die out. As long as humanity continues to progress and yearn to make something greater of itself, representations of this like Star Trek will still resonate. My four and a half year old loves wearing my Starfleet communicator badge and has many questions about space and the great unexplored unknown. It's also the job of trekkies to pass this down.

The movies feel like a modern extension of the original series to me. They feel like classic Trek in every sense of the word. I started out on TOS when I was 4, and when I saw the first nuTrek film in 2009, I felt like a kid again. It was all there.
