Will Tilly ever develop as a character?

Why does interacting with other characters automatically mean romance? This is a huge frustration of mine in fictional works, especially film and TV. "Are you dating someone?" is treated as a goal to accomplish rather than recognizing that people can hrow and develop and build relationships without romantic involvement.

Honestly, it would a refreshing change of pace.

While I agree with this in real life, I don't really think it works well for fiction in visual media.

In written works, we can have a first person narrative from inside a character's head. This allows us to know then intimately. But integrating first person narrative into a TV show is hard - particularly for anyone but the main character. The way we get to know them is by interactions with other characters.

Exactly what Fireproof78 said. Interaction isn't equal to romance. I have a female friend, we often go to the cinema (pre-covid), we interact, we share jokes. There is NO romantic part to that equation. We're friends. Not even best friends. Just good friends.

No, she does not NEED a romance for development. Could it be interesting to see Tilly deal with a romance right now, while she's struggling to adjust to her new life? Maybe. But it's not required.

Take for example Sex And The City. Have you ever noticed how the life goal of all women in that show is to find someone to be happy with? It's shows and movies like that that have thought us that life in only ok and worth living with someone else.

Right now, I'm single. And with being home alone a lot thanks to covid, I struggle sometimes. I feel lonely. And having a partner around would be nice. Someone to talk to. Then I realize, right, I have friends. Family. I call them, talk, laugh, share stuff with. And feel great. My interaction with another human being made me feel more like me. I did not require a romance for that.
