Will things get hot in Syria?

^^^ That's the thing. No one knows..

The world is just sitting on its hands and letting Russia do it's thing basically. No one wants to intervene.

I think we've got about as many sanctions as we could have against the Russians.

I'm not suggesting Putin is planning to overrun Europe, but the Russians do seem to be treating Syria a bit like the Germans treated Spain in the 30s, ie as a testing ground for all their new kit.

unnamed US sources are suggesting several Russian cruise missiles landed in Iran. Opps (if true)

They're also using it to dump old munitions, like 20-30 year old cluster bombs.

Smart thing. Getting rid of old stock while giving their air and ground crews operational experience.

Nice weather for it.

Well, the Europeans could boycott Russian oil and natural gas (over a quarter of total usage) which would in time harm Russia financially, but I don't see this happening.

As the saying goes "winter is coming."

I think it's really only Germany that could make a difference there. The UK doesn't utilise Russian gas, and France doesn't use much at all.

Germany can't do without Russian gas for more than a few weeks/months (depending on when the boycott would start). It will take years to get rid of that dependency.

The same is true for many countries in Eastern Europe. We won't see anything happening there. We need the gas, Russia needs the business (and can't risk being seen as an unreliable supplier in their core business).

And no, you can't just transport enough liquid gas by ship to Germany. There isn't even an LNG terminal in Germany and the pipelines from the Netherlands wouldn't have enough capacity either.

Things might change when (if) they really build an LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven but in the coming years? Forget it.

Looks like Turkey has shot down a drone violating its airspace. Does Russia have drones or is this likely to have been a US vehicle?

Doubt any of ours would be near there but you never know. The Americans are saying its Russian, the Russians are predictably saying they haven't lost any drones :)

Despite common beliefs Russia is not much out of date when it comes to their military, some of their newest designs are said to be superior to their western (mostly US) counterparts such as the PAK-FA 5th generation stealth fighter or the new Armata tank.

So yes, Russia has and uses drones and it is most likely one of theirs (and i sincerely doubt it's a navigation error, the technology is too good and precise for that to be the case).
