Will there be a pass the torch charater?

Yep. Send in Conner Trinneer and slather on the old age makeup.
I'd really like that, but he'd be just too old. From Enterprise it would have to be T'Pol, Soval, Phlox or maybe Shran.

If there is a cameo I think it would most likely be Pike played by Bruce Greenwood.

Was there any suggestion on how Denobulans age? I would love to see Phlox pay a short visit, but I'm fearing an outrage over it. Maybe it's safer to go human? It wouldn't be stranger than 137 year old McCoy chatting with Data, which was the only redeeming moment in Encounter at Farpoint.

AFAIK, Denobulan life span has never been established.

As for Dax, I believe Emony (the Olympic gymnast) is the current host as of DSC's timeframe.

Bakula is working for CBS. He can be the cameo character.

CBS Executive: "Scott, we need you to do a cameo in the new Star Trek pilot."
Bakula: "NO! NOOOOOOOOO!!!" [smashes an awards case in anger] "I've made too many compromises already, too many retreats. Not again! The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And I will make them PAY for what they've done!"
CBS Executive: "Um, yeah. They will pay. About $5.99. $9.99 with no ads."

An aged Enterprise character would probably make the most sense, as it was the last series to air. I love the idea of Bakula doing it, particularly as he already works for CBS.

What if he brought up the classic gazelle speech again, which in Discovery's period is now studied at the academy. :D

Alternatively I would go with Phlox, as he's the most interesting character that's alive. T'Pol at a push I suppose?

Or sod it and shove Shran in. He's been in DS9, VOY and ENT so that would be a super-awesome pass the torch, even if he wasn't a main cast member.

Traditionally, there has been a "pass the torch" character in the first episode of each new incarnation of Star Trek.

TNG- Deforest Kelly as Dr. McCoy
DS9-Patrick Stewart as Capt. Picard
VOY-Armin Shimmerman as Quark
ENT-James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane
Kelvin-Leonard Nimoy as Spock

Will there be one in the first episode of Discovery? If so Who? Fuller says there will be no established characters in the first season. Seems a shame to break this tradition. :)
Also GEN - Kirk

As for Discovery maybe CG Hunter or young Shatner?

You know, I kind of like this idea. :)

Have cgi tweaked actor lookalike as Kirk literally pass a torch to someone when the lights go out in Utopia Planitia.

In all seriousness, an aged Scott Bakula is definitely the way to go. Can have the aged Trip as a tip of the hat to the novels and those people who loved enterprise be unnamed and meet him as he totters off. I don't even like enterprise, but aged Scott Bakula is by far the easiest, most honourable way to go. (Am attempting to actually watch enterprise through properly now I am older and further away from it. It worked wonders for my evaluation of voyager, but never works for nemesis.)

Entirely possible that Archer ended up in a relativistic subspace anomoly which allowed him to still be around when Discovery launches (the same sort of time as ST-XI). He'd be about 144, which seems a push given McCoy's age in Farpoint, unless there were unusual circumstances.

i'd really be OK with any ENT character - archer, as a former enterprise captain, would maybe carry the most symbolic weight, t'pol (or maybe phlox) would make the most sense in-universe, and using trip could/would undo the damage done by his totally unnecessary, gratuitous "death" in TATV.

No Ent characters, please. Why would I want to be reminded of something I've avoided all of these years.

How about a communication from Cmdr. Kirk in command of the USS Saladin? He doesn't even need to be there in person, just a message.

If they wanted they could do an Enterprise character without having to worry about aging them up, they could just have them watch a video of one of them. Maybe someone watches a recording of a speech Archer gave a few years after the Terra Prime episodes or something.
How hard would it be to do the digital deaging from Ant-Man or Benjamin Button on a TV budget? Could we get a cameo from a deaged William Shatner or George Takei?

It's cgi deaging.....not a year spent with the Baku.
