Will there be a pass the torch charater?

Traditionally, there has been a "pass the torch" character in the first episode of each new incarnation of Star Trek.

TNG- Deforest Kelly as Dr. McCoy
DS9-Patrick Stewart as Capt. Picard
VOY-Armin Shimmerman as Quark
ENT-James Cromwell as Zefram Cochrane
Kelvin-Leonard Nimoy as Spock

Will there be one in the first episode of Discovery? If so Who? Fuller says there will be no established characters in the first season. Seems a shame to break this tradition.

I wouldn't mind a "pass the torch" character in the pilot of Discovery.

Maybe there'll be no established characters that have any meaningful effect on the story, but a little cameo in the first episode wouldn't do any harm. Maybe an old T'Pol? Or at the least a previous Trek actor playing a different character?

T'pol or Soval would be great. I think Soval would be my first choice. I love seeing more of Gary Graham.

While it would be really cool to see an ancient Admiral Archer (with Porthos XIV) or Trip "Not Dead" Tucker, I doubt Discovery would want to remind people of Trek's least successful series.

Then again, I'd assume that of the movies too, and then Beyond went and heavily tied into Enterprise's third season.

I'd love to see anybody from Enterprise appear. T'Pol, Phlox, and Soval would be the most likely, since they come from long-lived species, but an elderly Archer would be cool. Or a relevant tape of a historical speech from President Archer.

According to IMDb, Anthony Montgomery currently has a reguar role on General Hospital. Three movies he'll appear in are currently in post-production. Career seems to go reasonably well.

Would love to see one. Maybe Arik Soong's son. He wouldn't be an established character and his face is known among all trekkies. He could even be there in just a quick cameo where he's looking for self sealing stem bolts.

Quark was not really a passing the torch character. he just appeared in one scene in the pilot so the show could make use of the existing DS9 sets and save some money on making up a new starbase or whatever. Neither was Chochrane; I'd put him more as a backstory character.
While I have no objection to a star trek alum appearing on Discovery, there's also no reason to pander to fans with callbacks and fanwank. If it works seamlessly with the story, great. If not...leave it out.
