Will "The Phantom Menace 3D" bomb?

It'll be interesting to see how much money the 2D theaters take in.

I might go see this. I don't have much love for the PT but after reading so many threads here lately on the subject, I've been interested in revisiting it. And 3D/Big D would probably be a lot more entertaining than renting the DVD.

Yeah I don't really think they're concerned with box office in take. This isn't like the first release of the film.

True, but they've also said the release of the other SW films in 3D is contingent on the success of THIS one.

So personally... I'm kinda hoping it does well. If only so I can check out the OT in 3D. :)

I just saw the new 3D poster. I think it's pretty cool. As I said I'll check this out and probably go convince my friends to see it with me. This is from someone who hates 3D as well. Interesting that Anakin isn't featured on the poster and they're heavily promoting Maul this time.

I think they heavily promoted Maul the first time around.

Then again, everything was promoted the first time around.

I saw the trailer for the 3D TPM in the cinema today. It looked amazing and the conversion 3D didn't look like conversion - it looked more like on a par with Avatar than with Thor or Captain America etc. TPM is the only SW prequel I don't have on DVD but I'll definitely be going to see this.

I don't think the younger generation really gives a shit about Star Wars.

You kidding? The Clone Wars show has really brought kids into Star Wars.
Well, I don't know any kids, and I don't watch The Clone Wars, so I am not a reliable source on this particular subject. :p

We did a parent child class at a local Waldorf school last year, one of the schools that doesn't like kids to watch very little TV (wanting them to use their own imagination instead), and I constantly heard the kids on the playground calling each other names from the Clone Wars series. If those kids are watching, then the mainstream kids are all over it.

Just my gut reaction: It will make ungodly amounts of money and ensure that Lucas' great great great Grandchildren will never have to work.

I work in elementary schools, and have seen a few kids with Clone Wars backpacks and shirts, but it is hardly a hugely popular thing for children in the same vein as Pokemon, Power Rangers, or the original Star Wars were in their day.

I think it will easily make enough to warrant the conversion, but certainly not as much as it's first theatrical run.

Oh, and the descendants of John Rockafeller have to work. :)

TPM made about $430 mil. domestically, so I think that expecting something similar would be downright ridiculous.

Lion King 3D made $91 mil. so far, and I'm not sure the infamous TPM could outperform the beloved Disney classic...

I think that anything above, say, 60 mil. should be considered a success.

Wow! I had no idea that Lion King rerelease made so little!

Okay. That isn't a little amount. But still, that is what the typical summer blockbuster makes in a few days. I would have expected far more from that film.

My job requires me to go into people's houses all day. Trust me, kids are freaking obsessed with the Clone Wars.

My take is that is a good haul for a movie:
-Long since out on DVD
-In a declining 3-D environment
-Released as an early FALL film

Disney seems to be very pleased also cause it caused them to move forward with releasing other modern animated classics in 3-D. Up next is I believe Beauty & Beast in Feb.

I watched A New Hope yesterday, probably for the first time in 5 years. I watched Phantom Menace a month ago. So seeing it again in 4 months seems way too soon.

I'll have to take your word for that. It hasn't been my experience. I talk to kids all day, and hear about everything from video games to movies to television to things they made with Legos, but have yet to hear a thing about Star Wars.

Where were the obsessed kids when The Clone Wars movie was in the theaters, and came away with only $35-million?
