Will "The Phantom Menace 3D" bomb?

It's undoubtedly one of the most notorious and badmouthed movies of the last two decades or so (perhaps even of all time).

However... There is one thing. It was considered a disappointment almost instantly when it was released (despite the huge ticket sales), and the resentment towards it grew with time, but when it came out on DVD two and a half years later, it still managed to sell like crazy (in fact, it was a record breaker - Wikipedia says 5 million copies were sold in the first two days).

But that was 10 years ago, and today, this film is probably ten times as infamous as it was back then.

So all things considered, do you think the 3D re-release will bomb at the boxoffice? Also, how much does it actually have to make to be considered a success? I'm thinking 70-90 million domestically, but how much does the 3D conversion even cost?

Lastly, are YOU planning on giving Lucas your hard earned cash... Again?

Droideka's in 3D!!! Seriously though...does this actually have to be a success? I kind of look it as simply a "treat" (take that word as you will now lol) for the fans. I don't think Lucas is thinking it will be a monster hit or is looking for monster box office intake. I could be naive and wrong of course, this is just my opinion but I don't think it's gonna do any kind of monster numbers. I may go see it but I despise 3D so probably not.

As for the question, thi is a tough call, as a lot of the died-in-the-wool Wars fan are against this. But the film will be the biggest hit with kids, and the brand will likely bring in a lot of other people. And the pod race will look fantstic. So who knows.

I will probably go and see it. Seriously, managing to make some of those character more than one dimensional would be a miracle in itself and would need to be seen to be believed.

I don't think it'll bomb but I don't think it's going to be this huge success everyone's expecting it to be. Putting aside the debate over 3-D fading (you'll have people coming up with numbers to support both sides of that issue), the fact is "3-D conversions" have been underperforming consistently. It's basically this generation's colorization and people aren't that interested. Something specifically made for 3-D like Green Lantern, fine, but taking a film that's more than a decade old and shoehorning it into 3-D? People aren't going to be that interested. Ditto Titanic.

Couple that with the fact that the prequel trilogy did not set the world on fire. Yes, lots of people went to see them. But, really, they have failed to have the cultural impact in the long term that the original trilogy had. It's been long enough now that we'd know if they were going to capture the people's imaginations. TPM came out in 1999; it's now 2011. Take A New Hope in 1977 and project forward 12 years and compare how much of an impact that film and its characters (along with episodes 5 and 6) had in that period of time. It ain't happening.

There are enough Star Wars fans out there who will buy anything that a 3-D TPM (and the others) will make a profit. But they won't revolutionize the entertainment industry or anything.

Well, Rick McCallum said the 3D releases of the other five movies are contingent upon the performance of Episode I, so Lucasfilm is clearly hoping it's a success.

Although, honestly, as a litmus test, Episode I isn't exactly the best movie to float as a test balloon with audiences...

I had already forgotten Green Lantern was in 3D. It was my first, and added so little that I forgot. I think I would have enjoyed it as much in 2D. So it wouldn't be for the 3d I would go, but for the big screen/big sound experience.

Anybody working on a time machine to go back and stop Lucas from making the second trilogy? Not that they're bad in an absolute sense. If PM was how it had all begun, most of us would be cooler with it. And if all we had were the later three (1-3), we'd love 'em. But not only were the first three (4-5-6) better, they were so wonderful and complete. A thing of beauty.

George Lucas, The poster boy of not leaving great enough alone.

On topic - it'll do well. I'll go, just because.

The only 3D movie I've ever seen that I felt needed to be seen in 3D was Jackass 3D. So yeah, I have no particular urge to see it but I admit I probably will simply because it is 3D Star Wars. Yup, I'm a bitch but at least I know it.

Ew, no. This sounds like a terrible idea. I'm certainly not going to waste my money on it. I still wish I could get my money back from the first time I sat through that shit.

Trekbbs gives us funny glasses, that our opinions are the same opinions as the rest of the world.

Phantom Menace 3D will more than pay for it's conversion. It will be profitable. Thus a success. Will it open at a 100 million? No. But, there are a LOT of kids out there, kids who will make their parents take them. It'll do well.

Will I go? Nah. Conversion sucks. And... yeah... it's the Phantom Menace.

I'm stoked for this release. TPM is the best SW candidate for 3d. You'll have the submarine scene, the podrace scene, the Obi-Wan/Qui-Gonn/Darth Maul fight, the big Naboo battle, and others I can't think of off the top of my head. Not to mention I'm aching to see which Jar-Jar affectations and jokes they put into 3D. Tongue? Farts? I am actually looking forward to this. Will it bomb? I don't think it can, seeing how they already made their money back over a decade ago. That's like asking if a rerelease of Gone With the Wind will bomb.

Sigh. Forget the 3D, George, the PT needs a rewrite. Just do it over again, and this time put Dave Filoni in charge, and let his people rewrite that first draft script you insanely decided to film.

Hey I can dream, can't I? :rommie:
