Poll Will the new reboot happen?

Will this movie reboot actually happen?

I don't put much stock in rumors, but there's one circulating in the comments at Trek Movie that the alleged upcoming film will essentially be a full reboot of Trek set in the 25th century aboard a starship Enterprise. This aligns with what the directors said about no existing characters and being set further in the future (meaning post-TNG era), but it's just a rumor.

If that's what this film will be, I'm not interested. I'd prefer a series and I'd also prefer something set between Enterprise and TOS. I think the "Star Trek The Beginning" movie that was canned for Abrams Trek had a lot of potential. Putting the Romulan War on the big screen would probably have a lot of non-Trekker appeal.

The thing is, even if Paramount released the most official of official statements, it is by no means certain that the project will actually happen, much less reading rumors from some clickbait site. I mean this whole Goldstein & Daley thing was originally announced in November 2025, and nine months later we still haven’t heard a single thing about preproduction, casting, etc., other than some vague bs about ‘the far future.’ Newsflash: ‘The far future’ is when this project will actually get made, if it even gets made at all.

Being a full reboot and also being concerned about setting it further forward than existing Trek, seem to be at odds with each other.

I agree, but I think the idea is that this reboot will be set further in the future so as to avoid previously-seen eras and to make it even more futuristic. I'm not sure either is necessary, but that's the impression I get from the rumors.

The overly insipid elements of the fanbase that think "further in the future than we've been before" is only relative to the Berman era are so tiresome.

It's a safe bet the people making up these rumours this film that may not even happen is set in the 25th century have toxic world views and feel threatened by the Kurzman era's existence of minorities.

I think this is a stretch. We're working in a vacuum, until that changes with actual details on how it is going to work, all we're doing is insulting each other for no good reason.

Most baseless rumours about the franchise thay have been spread over the past several years have come from positions of hate.

I learned long ago to ignore those folks. I just think it is silly to get amped up at this stage of the game. We have no directors or actors attached. We don't even know if a usable page of script even exists. Then there is the one-year hiatus that is going to put projects like these on the backburner. Most of the time, there never is a return to the front burner.

If someone is complaining at this stage of the game, they've lost the plot and should be roundly ignored.

With all due respect, this is one of the most intellectually vapid positions I've experienced in recent memory.

You're accusing people of having "toxic world views" and bigotry simply because they don't like something you do?!

I've been a Star Trek fan for over 40 years. I despise everything Abrams and Kurtzman have done to the name and the legacy. Not one iota of that disdain is because of how Kurtzman treats minorities. My issues are with a basic misunderstanding of how to tell Star Trek stories, an apparent disgust with the unities of the universe (continuity among them) and the fact that CBS, like every other media corporation today, signals virtue in an attempt to maintain their social credit scores. CBS and Kurtzman aren't crusaders for minorities or anyone else; they're out to make a profit from an IP they own and have to exploit so they don't lose the rights.

Contrast that with the real and lasting impact Roddenberry and many of the TOS-ENT actors had on society and fans. "Old Trek" as some call it today put narrative and characterization first. It rarely proselytized and told the viewer what to think, preferring to instead present a look at themes that challenged the viewer to look within and then look without. That's what great science fiction has always done and it's what not one second of Abrams or Kurtzman Dreck have managed.

To quote Trip Tucker's Vulcan professor, "Challenge your preconceptions, or they'll challenge you."

You have misinterpreted somewhat, allow me to clarify. I specifically refer to the people spreading the most baseless rumours regarding the ignoring of Kurzman era content, the firing of Kurzman etc etc. These people through observation do extend a lot of bigoted views.

Are these people representative of everyone who dislikes the Kurzman era shows? Of course not. But the average person just switches off and doesn't feel the need to campaign against these shows and start wild rumours based on their own wishes.

I believed it was clear and that I did not in any way say people were bigoted because they don't like something I do. If I was unclear, I hope this makes it clear. The only people I will accuse of bigotry are those that demonstrate bigotry.

If someone is already hating on something that has next to nothing known about it, then there’s something probably not nice driving their actions.
