I think they made about 5 attempts to follow on from Star Trek Beyond, which went nowhere, and at least one more (a space pandemic story) with a new crew which died due to covid.

Will Paramount's new owners actually get this new Star Trek movie made? Place your bets!

It’ll fall apart during development, just like all the other myriad projects. Paramount feature development just can’t get out of their own fucking way, no matter what administration is running the studio.

They were hardly massive successes back then... any brand awareness in the casual market will have eroded and it'll suffer from being both old hat and new and unknown at the same time if they did.

I'll take the third option of I really don't care about any reboots.

I thought the new movie was supposed to be new characters, not a reboot. More like the situation with TNG in 1987 than the movie from 2009.

Anyway, I think a movie with a totally new cast and totally new characters will happen. They'll have to rely on star power more than ever before, but that's the way I think it'll go.

How well it will do and whether or not it gets a sequel are totally different questions. But, at the very least, I think the movie they're trying to get off the ground right now will happen.

Star Trek 4 not happening had more to do with the people involved (and who came and went) not being able to get their act together, directors getting better offers, writers not writing acceptable scripts, and actors not getting the compensation they want.

If they can hold on to a director, have an acceptable script, and not lose actors over salary disputes, then the new creative team will be well on its way to making a new movie. Just because things fell apart with Star Trek 4 doesn't mean they'll fall apart here. None of the same people are involved. Management is completely different at the top. These are different people at every level. So, I'm not going to hold whatever the previous people messed up against the new people.

How many non starter Trek movies have we been promised since 2016? I've lost count.

I'm not going to believe anything at this point, until i'm in the theatre and the credits roll.

I think what makes it a bit hard for them is Star Trek has never been a massive money maker at the box office. It's done okay But I think the studios are more interested in a few big huge successes than a smattering of movies doing okay. Or a really cheap one that does well... Trek is neither.

If it gets made, it doesn't sound like it is going to be a reboot. Sounds like they are going to put it in a timeframe that'll keep it from bumping into what the other shows have carved out.

I was more enthusiastic for the abandoned Origins idea... which admittedly I probably projected some dynamism on - a modern take on Trek, push early Starfleet exploration to worlds dozens of light-years on our doorstep and maybe get an A-list star recast of Zefram Cochrane.

The Comic Con Pamel tidbits don't sound particularly encouraging. Even further into the future? More than where Discovery and er, Academy are? Because surely that's polarising?

It also doesn't sound in tune with what we're told is the new Paramount CEO's mindset of returning Star Trek to the glory days of everything from Khan through to the Next Generation. I mean 2009 was the last hope for that and the studio bungled it by not building quickly on the goodwill and momentum.

True enough, but sounded like a blinding obvious belief of a Trumpisn supporter now in charge. Of course you read and watch all that and wonder why Kelvin was moved away from... why Zack Snyder DCEU isn't already back and all those things that supposedly escew more right-wing, glamorise so-called sensible casting and preach less in storytelling.
