Will the New Enterprise's Bridge Dome be Transparent ?

Well, they'll have to wait a while, since unobtanium is well... unobtainable.

Why the Federation won't be fun and make up ironic names for things, I'll never know.

When engineers were designing the Constition-Class ships, instead of going through the trouble of creating a dome that is tough enough to protect the bridge, why not just put the whole bridge someplace deep inside the bowels of the ship?

While that certainly would have made practical sense, I suspect some unshakable and decades-long science fiction tradition of having the cockpit up front/on top of one's space ship/rocket ship (as well as a similar "on-top and facing forward" bridge orientation on modern naval ships of the 50s and 60s) may have had some small thing to do with the bridge placement on the Enterprise. Form does not always follow function, and especially not on television. ;)

I know...I'm one of the first ones who say "It's just a TV show -- just shut up and enjoy it"

But while we were on the subject of strength of materials for the bridge dome, I thought I'd just add my $0.02. There's a time and place for every inane argument/debate, and this seemed like it. ;)

I figured as much. ;) It just happened to trigger in me this odd combination of serious reply and "but that's the way Captain Comet's ship is!" Having grown up during a period when those nifty pulp sci-fi rocket-ship illustrations and far-out sci-fi TV shows and the real-live Space Age were all happening at the same time, I can look at it both ways and have each of them make perfect sense. :D

...and in "Errand of Mercy", the ship took half a dozen Klingon disruptor hits with shields down despite sensing an incoming craft during a period of high alert. :vulcan:

To nitpick (it's me, after all!), "Errand of Mercy" was another of those episodes where Sulu explicitly says the shields popped up all on their own, and the enemy fire hits them only after this declaration. And the whitish hits look like torpedoes rather than the later standardized green disruptor bolts...

Must be one of those strange edits. The version I recall seeing said nothing about shields. Oh well.

If it's a good movie, we won't even think to wonder what the dome is made from, we will be so caught up in the great direction, witty screenplay and riveting action adventure!

Who am I kidding, I hope the dome is made of rainbows and unicorns, kittens and gumdrops.

I say the dome should be made out of an easily renewable resource: Tribbles!
