Cryptic have always had trial versions or limited time available for their previous games, so expect something a few months after launch.
I'd like to knock up a (all female) crew...
Careful - with some species it's not so easy to tell.
I'd lke to quote Al Murray's Pub Landlord here but that would be crass.
It's a game I definitely need a free trial with before paying any money, but I could totally see myself losing a few months aboard an Akira class vessel.
Almost all MMOs offer a free 48 trial. Fortunately I don't have to concern myself with such things as I pre-ordered it the very instant it was possible to do so.

No MMO nowdays offers free trials at start, not until they iron out the inevitable bugs and glitches that are bound to pop at a massive launch.
Champions Online has no trial.
City of Heroes did because it was published and ran by NCSoft, who put forth the trial.
Champions has a trial on Steam actually.

I will wait until a trial. The game looks exciting, but I'd like to take a test run before I dedicate money to it.
