Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

There were at least two episodes that had somebody other than Al as the hologram (Killin' TIme, with Gushie, and Raped, with Dr. Beeks). I don't remember what kind of technobabble they had to pull off, but it was clearly possible.
It was just a little more difficult? Something like that

With Dr Beeks I think it required a lot of extra power.
Not sure what the excuse was with Gushie

Well, the excuse was that Al was busy trying to find the leapee who had escaped from the Waiting Room. I just don't remember the actual method they used to enable Gushie to take over.

As for Dr. Beeks...I could have sworn that she was in Raped (in the courtroom scenes when Katie, the real rape victim, is brought into the Imaging Chamber so Sam can repeat everything she says), but the QL wiki doesn't have her in the credits. Dr. Beeks WAS in that episode, wasn't she? IIRC it was because Katie needed to be in physical contact with Dr. Beeks otherwise Sam couldn't see or hear her.

Also I forgot that Dr. Beeks was also in Shock Theater but in that case Sam couldn't hear anything she said.

So anyone can be the hologram now, huh? In the original show, only Al could communicate with Sam because of their mental link through Ziggy, but here it's something anyone can do; it's just usually Addison's job. Well, I guess that makes sense in the context of this more ensemble-driven series, because it allows other characters to interact with Ben. We've already had Ian in the imaging chamber once, just as a passive observer with no interaction with Ben, but they may well get the chance to interact with Ben later on, and potentially Magic could get his turn as a hologram too. That would be cool -- when I first heard that Ernie Hudson would be in this show, I expected him to be the "Al" character, so it'd be nice to see that finally happen.

Once again, the lead female guest star is someone I could swear I've seen before, but is totally unknown to me according to her IMDb credits. Either I'm getting more face-blind with age, or the show's casting people just have a type they favor.

It's weird for Ben to leap before he learns the outcome. In the original series, Sam often leaped within moments of finally achieving his goal, but in this show there's usually plenty of time afterward for Ben and Addison's denouement.
1. She does look familiar

2. I'm pretty sure it happened with Sam, not leaping until a few minutes after he technically achieved his goal(s).

I said "often," not "always." And the point here is that I don't recall either Sam or Ben leaping before they found out that they'd succeeded in the leap's objective. It's particularly incongruous for Ben, given that up to now, he's usually been shown to stick around for some time afterward.

I guess you could say that the once the jury decided on a not guilty it didn't really matter if he was there once it was finally read.

So he did kinda 'stick around for some time', since the objective was technically completed once he swayed the jury and they voted not guilty.

Wasn't it that they had to be in physical contact with Al while in the chamber, and they couldn't speak. AL had to vocalize?

Well, I had been wondering for awhile if/when the other characters would take turns as the hologram. Jen as the hologram definitely added to the entertainment, what with her anti-sentimental snark. I especially loved it when she had Ben help that guy's girlfriend pay his bail by giving her the winning lottery numbers. It will be fun when they have the other characters take turns as the hologram seeing their unique styles to helping Ben out on the Leaps.

Psychiatric institution, thunderstorm and treatment - I’m think we’re getting references to the original series ep Shock Theatre which was followed by A Leap for Lisa (and had Terry Farrell as a guest star).

They had to basically be touching Al if they just wanted to be seen but couldn't be heard. For Goshie to talk to Sam though they basically had to scrambles brain patterns in his head to match up with Sam's brain patterns or something like that. This was also how Charles Rocket was able to see Al in that Christmas episode. He and Al shared the same brain patterns or something and thus he could see him. Same for mentally ill people.

I do wonder why they haven't explored the idea of kids and animals being able to see both Ben and Addison as they really look. Well I do get Ben I suppose since he is literally leaping into the bodies. But holograms you would think that kids and animals could see.

Nope. She gave them the Quintella bet at the race track (OTB), not lottery numbers.

Nope, the next episode was Al & Sam switching places and then PQL getting the mail Al drops in the mail box to open the Imaging Chamber Door.

I think the team subplot is also forcing another shortcut, in this case, letting anyone in the imaging chamber interact with the traveler.

I would be interested to see... would Addison or anyone else be able to interact with Leaper X...er Martinez?

And will next episode do the "switcheroo" (as a way to excite old viewers / spice up the drama)?

nothing ground breaking but nice to see Caitlin Bassett getting some media attention for her QL roles.

'Quantum Leap' star Caitlin Bassett jumps from Army to TV (msn.com)
Interesting, it appears Caitlin Bassett is younger than Addison is supposed to be. That article says Bassett is 32, while last week's episode said Addison was born in 1987, which would make her 36. Yeah, I know, actors don't need to be the same age as their characters, it just stands out to me all the same.

The age difference between 32 (about to be 33 in a few hours) and 36 is nothing.

They retconned the way the leaps work. So they might retcon this as well.

In the original, the subject's consciousness went into Sam's body while Sam leaped into theirs. Now it's changed so that when Ben leaps into someone, their consciousness is still there, just shoved over into the proverbial mental back seat. The retcon is that they now say this is how Sam's leaps worked all along.

Perhaps this means children and animals see the real person because the real person is still there?

Ultimately they can change this when they want because, you know, plot. So if the plot requires an animal or child to see Ben, they will.

In the original, the subject's consciousness went into Sam's body while Sam leaped into theirs.

The original show was inconsistent about this. Initially it implied that his mind leaped into their bodies -- how else would their clothes fit? But later on it was assumed that his body was leaping and people just saw an "aura" of the real person, so that he had his own abilities (like being able to walk while in the persona of a double amputee).

My take after tonight. I think Martinez is from a long gone timeline where there's an issue where they consider Addison surviving some kind of incident or situation a problem. Ziggy has something to do with it. I think Martinez is actually in the same program they are in, just a bit further into the future. I suspect it's run by someone more gung ho than Magic based on how Addison talked to him about not always using brute strength.

Now, the future Ian is from a timeline that resulted from the success of Martinez, where they somehow caught on and Ian decided to go back and warn Ben and have him do this program to save Addison, and whatever really happened (of course it would be written by a future Ian). Not sure why the future Ian didn't warn Ben about Ziggy.
