Will Sam Beckett Return Home? NBC Orders Quantum Leap Reboot Pilot

I hope it survives a few seasons. The original Quantum Leap was near the chopping block after season 3. It was lucky to get five seasons.

Current NBC will probably be harsher and be very critical after the first five episodes.

That is very interesting. I did not know that. The show nearly got the chop hey?

Ok start. Had a similar feel in places, 1985 wasn’t faked well. I don’t think they were using zip ties to subdue people back then.

It was definitely okay. I like the 2022 plot line they set up. 1985 was okay, but not very deep, exchanging drama for action while bouncing a little too much to the present. Part of the charm of the original was that we DIDN’T see much of the future except in specific episodes. I like that they’re giving us more of 2022, but hopefully not at the expense of the time the show needs to properly give us the drama in the past that the original was based on.

I didn't care for the pilot much, but hopefully it improves.
The whole thing felt very rushed and some pretty awful forced exposition. I'll be interested to see how it goes once those things are ironed out.

Two very minor gripes. Why does a hologram's hair blow in the breeze? And they shouldn't really have that file photo of Sam Beckett. Obviously it's a old promo pic of Bakula, but Sam didn't have the grey streak before he Leapt. Maybe Al dressed up one of the Leapees and took their photo. ;)

Not so much luck as benevolence. NBC's head Brandon Tartikoff was a big supporter of the show, so he kept renewing it despite its ratings struggles.

That's troubling. The original was very much a dramatic/comic anthology driven by character rather than action. I hope they don't just make this an action-packed Blindspot clone.

2022 we invent a time machine? I don't buy that. :)

It was invented in 1995, according to the original series.

OK that's even more far fetched haha........

Heck, H.G. Wells's Time Traveller invented his Time Machine the 1890s. The Time Tunnel was up and running by 1968, ten years after Project Tic-Toc started. Doc Brown completed his DeLorean time machine in 1985, after getting the idea for the flux capacitor 30 years earlier. There are generations' worth of time travel stories with time machines being invented in the present day or near future. A 1989 show putting its invention in 1995 is par for the course.

I do find it a bit surprising that the new show features Project Quantum Leap in the present day instead of the near future. Maybe that's because it's focusing more regularly on the PQL stuff. Also, when the original show did give glimpses of the "near future" 1990s, it was rather more sci-fi futuristic than could be justified with just 6-7 years' difference. Maybe the new show wants to avoid that kind of quickly-outdated guesswork about the future.
