Will Quinto be in Trek XII?

Mr. Laser Beam

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
There's a TrekToday item which says that Quinto won't be doing anything Trek related for a few years. What does this mean for Trek XII? Assuming the film is still being worked on, does that mean Quinto won't be in it? They haven't started filming, have they? Can anyone confirm, in light of Quinto's recent comments, that he *will* be in the film?

His comments, FWIW, are this:
I’m stepping away from Star Trek for at least two years, no movies, no conventions, no anything for a while.

Isn't Quinto, like all the other regulars, contracted to be in ST XII and one more sequel? He can't back out now, can he?

That means only that his schedule for the last two years and more has been filled with Trek-related stuff--filming the movie, the early convention appearances, the interview circuit, the worldwide promo tour, the premieres, the post-release interviews, recording the audiobook version of the novelization, voicing a character in the Star Trek: Online game, etc., etc.--and that he's not going to do anything more with Trek until he comes back to it fresh as filming begins on Trek XII, probably in early 2011. That is all it means.

He is contracted and he will be in the next movie, which--barring any unforeseen delay--we will see released in a little short of two-and-a-half years' time (or "at least two years" -- see how that works?)

good. he was getting in too deep with the fan stuff. stepping away for a bit will do him good.

I know the movie's expected *release* date, but they'll have to start filming well before then. If Quinto's comment about not doing any Trek movies for two years is legit, then how could he have time? If Trek XII is to come out anytime in 2012, then they couldn't possibly wait for two years to start filming it.

I'm just trying to interpret what he said. These things we do know: 1) It's 2010 now; 2) He said - again, now - that he won't be doing any Trek movies for two years; 3) So therefore the earliest he could start filming Trek XII would be in late January of 2012. That's nowhere near enough time even if they waited until 12/31/2012 to get Trek XII out.

(Edit: The new film is supposed to be out in June of 2012. So taking Quinto's comments at face value would seem to be impossible. These movies take at least a year to make, so they can't possibly wait until January of 2012 to start filming if they want to have the movie finished and released by June. )

I figured he meant movies in general, or that somehow make a reference to, or involve his role in Star Trek aside the fact that he's contracted to appear (and would likely have to pay a hefty sum to get out of it) he's also said he's willing (I can't source it, sorry, but I remember reading this) to give up his role in Heroes for Star Trek (Spock), Like others, I figure he means interviews and promotional stuff.

This is inter-movie hype.

ST XI stopped filming in March 2008. It's already almost been two years.

Even if not, even if two years from today, two years is a long time. People change their minds. In my own life, I'm considering things I felt the exact opposite about two years ago due to reflection, re-evaluation, and change in general.

But even if he doesn't change his mind and he feels that strongly about it, then JJ Abrams will wait until Quinto is good and ready. Or they'll threaten to recast, if it comes to that, and he'll change his mind. They're not going to make a movie based on TOS characters without Spock.

Or they'll threaten to recast, if it comes to that, and he'll change his mind.

Perhaps. We can only hope that it *doesn't* come to that. Or that if it does, Quinto actually does change his mind. (I would guess that a breach-of-contract charge isn't something he could just brush off.)

They're not going to make a movie based on TOS characters without Spock.

Maybe not without Spock, as a character, but JJ doesn't have to just threaten to recast - he could actually do it.

Yeah, I read that news. I'm so worried, I like to see as Spock again in the sequel and either movies to this one. I loved him as Spock in last year movie, and thought he was as good as Leonard Nimoy. Those are the only two that I love as Spock. IMO I dont think anybody could replace or do as well as Spock other than Leonard Nimoy & Zachuary Quntio. Please Zach come back for the sequel.

Zach made a blog post to clarify what he meant. So from the horses mouth so to speak:
i have been inundated with questions and confusion about a comment i made during an interview with wired - about the new atari star trek online game - in which i said i am stepping away from trek for the next two years. obviously i will be a part of any upcoming films... reprising my role as spock. what i meant was that in the meantime i won't be making any public appearances related to the franchise - or doing anymore auxiliary projects pertaining to the trek universe. i will be focusing my efforts on other projects and preparing to shoot the next film - which will be released in june of 2012... two years from now. hence the no trek for two years remark. worry not trekkers. it was a misunderstanding of context. i am not spock. but i am spock. all at the same time.

See, fuss about nothing, he's just stepping back from conventions and stuff to concentrate on doing something different which is what he needs to do for his career.

LOL@ anyone who was 'worried' that he wasn't going to be in Star Trek XII. I bet Quinto is sat there thinking "Oh my God, you total morons".

It worked for me, just now, but here's another link or three:

Bottom line is that it's exactly as I said above: Quinto will be in Trek XII; he's just taking time off from doing publicity appearances or tie-in work until 2012. This thread is much ado about nothing.
