Will "Killing In The Name" be Christmas #1?

There has been a Facebook campaign to get Rage Against The Machine's "Killing In The Name" to be the Christmas #1, presumably as a protest against the X-Factor single getting it for the 5th year in a row.

I think it would be hilarious if the Facebook campaign wins and the song does get the #1 slot, something of an amusing footnote in an industry which in its current state - and indeed in the past - allows such anomalies to happen (see "Mr. Blobby" ). I must admit, however, that I prefer the Miley Cyrus version of the X-Factor single performed by... who was that guy again?

Anyway, it's been a close battle, punctuated by some amusing anecdotes of some pre-watershed radio broadcastings of the RATM song, but it looks like the X-Factor winner person might edge it.

Personally, I prefer this version.

I was liking her version of the track long before it become associated with X-Factor.

Dont diss Blobby, if my parents had let me, I would have bought that song.

However seriously now I am glad that someone has finally shown Simon Cowell that his reality TV stars are not a guarantee No1, of course it would be nice had the song that beaten if been just a song that sold on its own merits, not something from the past aided by a facebook campaign.

The Christmas No1, has thrown up alot more oddity's than just Mr Blobby, its always been a time of year where a quirky song could make it to No1, be it Rolf Harris, Benny Hill, St Winifred's School Choir or Bob The Builder.

As much as its sad that X-Factor has come to dominate the Christmas No1, its even sadder that novelty acts like the ones ive posted above are not No1, and there are alot fewer of them around these days. Three Cheers for Mr Blobby long over due a TV come back if you ask me.

I like his voice too, and I like that the the song is somewhat different to the previous winners' ballads - although I like the Miley Cyrus version much more - but the whole marketing machine of the X-Factor is what really grates.

Thinking about this further, given the events of this year, and the idea behind it, I'd have still preferred it if it was "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys. [Now that's fighting talk - someone]

I bought it, I've never been a fan of the bland shite X-factor pumps out. I would have preferred if Tim Minchin had been in with a chance though.
Looks like it's been a close thing but I don't think RATM will be no.1, and after reading Joe's comments online I think I want them to win even more. It's like he expects to be handed the number 1 slot for simply being the X-Factor winner.

It's not a campaign against Joe, it's a campaign against the X Factor and a music industry so vapid that it pushes a talent-show singer's cover of a Miley Cyrus song for the most important chart-position of the year. I'm not a Rage Against the Machine fan, and I normally find Killing in the Name too angry for my more sedate form of cynicism towards authority, but at least when I hear the song I feel that it means something to the guys performing it.

Besides, shouting "Fuck you, I wont do what you tell me" at the top of your lungs is a much more fun thing to do on a night out than singing "It's the climb".

Sony BMG own both labels. Rage Against The Machine have said they're giving any windfall from this to the charity Shelter.
