Will Hindu, Christian or Scientology feature in this Trek movie ?

I read religion may feature in this movie, Roberto Orci did mythology in his Hercules show and J J Abrams is reportedly explored Hinduism, Buddhism and is an ex Scientologist. I've read Nero's Romulan will be more religious ?

Being a Romulan its unlikely to be a Human religion, but if it is true it could be based on some of Earths religions

Scientology- phf!

Where did you read about Nero's (a dumb name as far as I'm concerned) religious background? I'm just curious.

As far as religion goes, it's a hot topic right now, and Star Trek has always tried to use their stories to talk about what is current- so I can see certain religious aspects about a character that reflect contemporary situations being in this movie.

I hope it doesn't feature too prominently. IMO religion has been more of a background piece for Star Trek. Yes religion did feature on DS9 with all this scripture stuff but Roddenberry was dead when DS9 aired so it became the black sheep of Trek. You also see a lot of pagan and modern religions mirrored in alien societies but IMO its more background filling, while science, human issues and exploration are the key issues more important to the ST story. I think the name is certainly Roman inspired, Nero last Roman Emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. I don't think religion will be a key part of the story, but they might describe events which led to the Romulan-Earth cold war or the xenophobic nature of the Romulans.

If scientology features so strongly in the film, I think Trek fans will walk away and the movie will flop like Battlefield Earth (only hollywood celebs and Beck purchased cinema tickets for this one)

Religions vary in their degree of idiocy, but I reject them all. For most people, religion is nothing more than a substitute for a malfunctioning brain." Heh heh. Seems rather misanthropic for a secular humanist. :p

Nonsense.

Dear Lord, I hope NOT! The last thing I will buy a ticket to is someone stepping on my faith (relationship with my creator) with their religion (man-made).:vulcan:
I'd love to know some factual basis for this claim of yours. Or is this another one of those... I heard it from my sister's dog groomer who's friend walks JJ's dog?:vulcan:

There's a lot of "may" and "reportedly" and "I've read" in this, but not much in the way of substance. Are there any sources you'd care to cite?

Glad to know the king of tolerance, was so tolerant of things he disagreed with with his balanced well considered approach to such topics...

Not an off description of some "fans" I might think either - or that GR was seeking to make a buck out of his enlightened way of thinking.

Once again, I really don't think this needs to be an issue-based film. I have said this about various social issues, and I say it about religion as well.

I really hope that everyone saves their various agendas for another time, and just focuses on making this film be simply a great action/adventure story - well written, well acted, and well directed.

That, IMO, is the best hope we have of saving Trek from getting locked in a dusty vault for the next 15 years.

I heard from a friend of a friend of a friend of my sister's ex-boyfriend, who knows this guy whose brother used to date the daughter of the woman who does the hair of the girl who dates the guy whose son walks JJ Abram's dog that, since Leonard Nimoy is Jewish, it will be revealed that the Vulcans (and therefore the Romulans) are actually one of the lost tribes of Israel (Issachar, rumor has it) and the plot of the movie involves a time-travel plot to stop the Roman's from destroying the Second Temple. And due to a time travel accident Nero the Romulan ends up being the Emperor Nero of Rome.

That's what I heard anyway.

Sounds plausible.

Roddenberry, while he had a great vision, was a complete disaster.

I don't think Roddenberry hated religion but he was skeptical on the whole spirituality stuff and I think he hated the institutions behind them. IMHO religion should be a more personal choice and these institutions often take away people's personal freedom of choice. I've seen some Abrams interviews at Trekbbs and so far nothing indicates to me he will be putting $cientology or whatever into this movie.
