Will Decker in literature

What about Scotty's racism against Klingons, speaking of racism?
What racism, he didn't start a fight until they dissed the Enterprise. I'd say that shows restraint. I've have decked one the second he dissed my captain.

Actually, Scotty made some pretty harsh statements in the Undiscovered Country, particularly about Azetbur.

"I'd bet that Klingon bitch killed her father! [...] she did not shed one bloody tear!"

Those are what I remember at least. Not necessarily racist, more a comment on her character than anything.

Yet certainly a bigoted comment and ignorant at that considering that Scotty didn't take into consideration that Klingon physiology might not have the same physical responses that a human body has.

Dammit, man, he's an engineer not a doctor! ;)

For the record, I hate the clips they inserted into the Spock/Valeris mind-meld scene on the SE DVD. So unnecessary.

TOTALLY agree. The new additions are very jarring, especially with the bang-like sound they use. Not needed at all...

How else would you maintain the cleanliness of your eyes? It makes no sense from a biological standpoint and I just tend to chalk it down to bad writing, like the Klingonese/Federation Standard dictionaries used in the same movie. I mean, they could have used the computer for near instantaneous translations in both directions and then spoken a response aloud. It would have been faster, but I guess they wanted the comic impact??

IIRC, the novelization had Valeris sabotaging the computer translator.

Well that makes alot more sense then. I wish they had a line about that in the movie somewhere, it definitely would have helped that scene.

Yes, but that was why they had to respond in the original language. What's being discussed is that there's really no reason why they couldn't have asked the computer for a translation, then read it off into the com., instead of the slow method of flipping through a translation dictionary.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Spock's tear duct statement came after Scotty added that the Klingons were not like them. So, I think those statements, coupled with the behavior of the Enteprise senior staff and some of the junior crew displayed racist attitudes towards the Klingons.

Though some might not have liked it, I'm glad they went there in ST:6 with Kirk and the crew. It made them appear more human to me, and it made the end, when Kirk and Azetbur stood together on Khitomer far more poignant. Plus, it made sense to me that Kirk, etc. might come to harbor negative, though perhaps unjustified, views about the Klingons after years of cold war, and one hot war, with them.
