In case you haven't heard Kat Dennings has nude pictures on the net She is in one of the biggest movies of the summer. So does Blake Lively. She is in a network television show. Renee Olstead has some pretty explicit ones too. You make say "who" as I did until I found out she played he daughter on one of my favorite underrated sitcoms, the Jami Gertz vehicle Still Standing. Oh and some girl named Lopez may have a sex tape coming out.

Point is all of these women are rather well known mainstream actresses. Sex tapes and nude pictures were not so long ago the purview of zero-talent socialites and has been C-listers desperate for attention. Now while admittedly in celebrity cases these often get out without permission and may have been obtained illegally they also indicate that starring in your own sex films and pictures is an extremely common practice in this day and age no matter your social standing. And even more importantly preventing them from getting out may be a hopeless cause.

Being a gen-Xer I came of age just before the explosion of social networking and cell phones. I remember the days when a sex tape might have been the ruin of your career. But with today's generation there are so many of them naked on the Internet you might think they passed a law mandating it. Even my 44 year old girlfriend says she thinks this is totally normal for young people today and she could see doing it if she were young (apparently we are both too old and ugly for it). This maybe just a case of a generation mainstreaming something their parents didn't, like people smoking pot in the 60's and 70's.

So is it time to get rid of any social stigma for celebrities or for that matter anyone who decides to have visual evidence of their in flagrante delicto?

I don't think there's nearly as much stigma as there used to be. In all fairness, it's also a lot easier for this kind of stuff to get out. You take a few pictures, think you're giving them to your boyfriend, and before you know it they're all over the Internet.

I think it is horrible if pics and vids are sent out via hackers or people betraying the trust of the celeb...but also...there is the thought of if you don''t want this type of thing out there...don't do it in the first place...there are creeps who illegally tape people like that female from ESPN...it all really sucks for people who had no intention of their nakedness being out there.

I’d venture to say that, on a percentage basis, more celebrities than regular folks look good naked. After all, looking good, in or out of clothes, is part of their job.

OTOH, there’s always plenty of work for body doubles.

As for nude pictures, the ones of Marilyn Monroe that showed up in Playboy magazine’s first issue in 1953 didn’t hurt her career any.

But seriously...and this goes for anyone, not just celebrities...if you don't want a particular photo, nude or not, out there for the whole world to see, don't pose for it. The person you are seeing right now might be the man (or woman) of your dreams today. But don't fool yourself - a lot of people can turn into some MEAN SOBs after a breakup. Nudity is like singing, dancing, writing and art-- it should be left to people who are qualified.

As for celebrity nudity, that goes back at least as far as Hedy Lamarr in the 1920s, and has become more and more frequent over time as society struggles to become less constipated.

It's not an issue of rights. That material can be leaked, may very well be leaked, and the fact it could be leaked is something someone should consider before taking such a photograph. Whether or not anyone has any right to leak the files, it may happen anyway.

Obviously, it's a little harder on people who made those videos/pictures before they were famous, but fame does inevitably violate much of one's privacy.

As an historian, I have to say: if you want to keep your thoughts private, then you should follow just that rule.

Even if you leave instructions in your will for your heirs to burn your papers, there's no guarantee that they will. And before long, historians will be poring over them, and telling the world about all the nasty shit you thought and said and did in your life. We live for those kinds of posthumous revelations.

If you don't want other people reading your private thoughts, then don't write them down. Keep them in your head, and don't put anything on paper. It's just that simple.

After all: what makes you think other people can keep a secret that you can't?

I'm just acknowledging people will leak. If you want to find that immoral or disgusting, please, go right ahead. But these photos exist, and there's clearly a prurient demand for them to be leaked.

Assuming the demand or the interest in leaking is something not so easily fixed, not making the photos at all seems to be the only option if you don't want them ever leaked.

Basically, what you guys do is to defend the bullies and tell the bullied that it's all their own fault.


People act like they have a right to invade and interfer with the lives of (famous) people. They don't. They act like celebrities owe them something and judge them according to that. I'm sick and tired of that fucking arrogance.
