Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoilers

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

I went to a late August, early September screening of ST09 in IMAX. Waiting for the film to start I overheard some joker behind me state: "This movie better not turn my son into a nerd."

If that ended up being the case for his son I do not know, but I kind of hope it did.
Why would anyone wish such ill will on his son? Nerds get more action than jocks these days.

The third biggest movie of all time is a superhero movie.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Very puzzling, especially given the fact MoS also rehashes a villain with previous big screen exposure.
Star Trek isn't in the same league with Superman. It's not even close.

Or, maybe not so puzzling, if we're willing to at least consider the possibility MoS rehashes Zod in a better way than ID rehashes Khan? *slaps self for even thinking such blasphemy*

Would taking the time to fill in all the Khan back-story, even if they totally retconned it, made it longer to compensate that time taken, have better resonated with audiences the way MoS seems to be doing?
How would that have helped? You have to get the people into the theater first to see it.

I just saw Man of Steel, I'd hesitate to call it better written than STID. It's, I suppose, more accessible, if you like to see origin sequences that take 2.5 hours.

Superhero movies are more relatable to current day problems and popular than sci-fi movies set 300 years into the future?

And isn't that sweet irony ?

When I spoke of stigma, I meant the flops at the box office and on TV. Trek was on a downward spiral and I think it's great that JJ has been able to be as successful with it as he has been given that history. I'm not sure how we could expect that much more.

Then I guess the stigma's pretty much gone even by that standard.

You mean like the last Star Trek movie ?

Trek is beating the crap out of Superman on Rotten Tomatoes.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Super hero movies have millions of children begging to go see them. I don't think Star Trek has that going for them (although I did as a youngster).

Which no one cares about.

Certainly, that the critics like a movie can help you see if it's well-made, but ultimately the question is: do you enjoy it ? And I did, so screw the critics on this one.

I'm just saying.

I haven't seen Superman yet (I'm not really into superheroes) but I'm looking forward to it.

My wife and I both thought it was a stellar movie. :techman:

I wouldn't, not for a moment - on at least two simple grounds: the internal logic of the plot is tighter, and the story requires less interest in or familiarity with back story from previous films or stories.

It's, I suppose, more accessible, if you like to see origin sequences that take 2.5 hours.

To most people, it's just a story. You shouldn't have to invest in the notion that there are other stories which precede and follow the one you're watching to get everything you can out of a movie.

Besides, Superman has the best origin story ever; in many ways his origin is his whole story. All the stuff that comes later is kind of tougher to get involved in.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Star Trek has a stigma attached to it. It's just not "cool"

One might say the same thing about superhero comic books. But movies based on those comic books often perform extremely well.

Not really--that's more comedian routine than truth, as superheroes--whether on TV or the big screen--appealed to more than the comic fan demographic. Going back several decades, the Batmania that swept the U.S. (and beyond) in the 60s did not happen based on comic readers. The general public turned that TV series into a phenomenon. Similarly, the Donner Superman movies, Burton & Nolan's take on Batman, Raimi's Spider-Man films or The Avengers were all massive hits, thanks to a public that did not have the "uncool" stigma in their minds regarding people in tights fighting crime.

To the OP's question, a counter question: if audiences pass on nuTrek, but run to superhero films, what is nuTrek missing?

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

Funny, die-hard Superman fans seem to hate Man of Steel just as much as some die-hard Trek fans hate Abrams Trek. Maybe more.

And just as with Star Trek it's a pretty tiny minority of fans who dislike it.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

I really disagree, I find Superman's origin beyond boring. All you need to know is that he's an alien, his homeworld blew up, and he survived and was raised by nice folks on Earth. The countless interpretations of it, with Jor-El as a quasi action hero or as a hologram that never stops bothering his son drive me nuts.

"To the OP's question, a counter question: if audiences pass on nuTrek, but run to superhero films, what is nuTrek missing?"

I'm not sure, but, hazarding a guess, I think comics speak to a younger/wider demo because they are perceived (often correctly), to be a little flashier, faster, and action packed. I love Abrams Trek, but I think a lot of potential moviegoers still think of like, Undiscovered Country (which I like, but recognize is not for everyone), where you have Federation Council people debating interstellar politics.

Re: Why would someone avoid STID but see Iron Man & Man Of Steel? spoi

All the reasons given in this thread could be the truth, but in my honest opinion, STiD's blunder was in the marketing campaign. And of course, to make the villain a no name guy with a surprise that was already guessed out two years ago was a big fucking mistake. It is certainly embarassing STiD is running out of fumes before reaching $500M yet Iron Man and MoS (will) easily make 1B.

I said superhero comic books were considered "just not 'cool'", not superheroes themselves.

Exactly.

I think there maybe something to this. My friends who have young kids have seen Iron Man mainly because the kids wanted to see it. Star Wars does well with the kiddies too. Trek audience seem to be older, over 70% of the moviegoers in the opening weekend of STID were over 25 years old.
