Why wasn't Robau suprised when he saw Nero..?

Roald

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
He must have thought the Narada crew were Vulcans, right? I think it would have been cool if he had said something like: 'How can you do this? You're Vulcans!' And then Nero would respond: 'We are NOT Vulcans!', and Robau would give this confused look. It would have made clear that he didn't know it were Romulans, 'cause in keeping with canon, humans had never seen a Romulan at that point (even though I've always thought that was rather silly considering they were at war with them).

In this new version of the Trekiverse, Vulcans and Romulans are known "relatives." Spock even makes casual reference to it (no "shocking revelation") in justifying his being the one to go to the Narada... an expected socio-cultural familiarity with the written and spoken language.

He probably didn't give a shit what they looked like. Well, he is the ROBAU so we know he didn't give a shit what they looked like.

His only concern was them attacking and nearly destroying his ship.

Well remember the ENT timeline Rommies were pretty damn close to being found out and that was what? 100 years prior. I always thought it was silly that the Fed had no idea what Romulans look like. Puh fraggin' leez... like NO Romulan was ever captured or NO Feddy ever found a Romulan corpse floating in space or something. Or someone on Vulcan or Romulus didn't spill the beans.

Its like saying the US never knew what a real Russian looked like.

OK. I totally agree with NickRyder.

BUT

Let's assume that they don't know what Romulans look like.

Let's say a gigantic squid vessel comes out of a black hole. It proceeds to rip your little survey vessel a new one. Then some bald Maori tattooed vampire dude comes on the screen. BTW he has pointy ears.

Let's just put it this way: There were enough forehead aliens on DS9 and Voyager to fill an encyclopedia. There were also lots of aliens that looked completely indistinguishable from humans.

Under the circumstances, as Robau, I don't think my first response to Nero would be, "Dude, but aren't you Vulcan?"

He didnt really have time to comment on their appearance, they popped up, trashed the ship, invited him over for a housewarming party, then stabbed him in the face when he started asking who the hell they were and where they were from. No doubt the question would have cropped up at somepoint during the tea party, but he upset the Khan-wannabe too soon for that im afraid.

I agree. Honestly, they fought against each other in a war that lasted several years and had no idea who they were fighting? There's no motivation in warfare if you don't have an enemy, and "they shot first" is not a valid argument.

but... but... they were using primitive atomic weapons... and they didn't have warp drive...

that last bit always got me. you'd have a tough time getting to an adjacent planet much less an adjacent star without FTL travel. what were the romulans threatening in the first war? to invade their moon?

I agree. His first concern was why they were attacking his ship and how he could get them to stop. Nero killed Robau before he could past that stage. The identity of the Romulans one could assume they figured out in the after action report.

If Vulcans were known to be pacificsts, his vessel surely signified his non-Vulcanness.

Just as Robau's vessel signified his badassness: it only needed one nacelle to go as fast as ships with two.

My guess was shuttles escaping from Kelvins had scanning data and the weps signature matched close enough from Rom Wars to know it was Rommies/ So over that 25 years Rommies could of made facial contact with Federation maybe to say it wasn't us so don't go starting a war  you get what I mean so that explains why Spock and rest know about Romulans.

As for Kelvin bit with Robau maybe there scanners said Romulans weps or he didn't recognise them but just wasn't bothered who they were just why they were attacking...He didn't really get much to say had to answer a few questions then oddly stand still as Nero ran at him ;)

Plenty of Trek races look alike.

He probably didn't think they were Vulcans but a Vulcan-look a like.

Just like if he encountered a group of human-looking aliens attacking him he wouldn't say, "Buh-wha-huh? You're humans! You can't do this!"

yes. exactly

In the tie in book, George Kirk theorises that they must be romulans because they show emotions which is un-vulcan like. Robau seems to agree with this. But there was some uncertainty. They were not 100% sure

Exactly, it makes no sense whatsoever.

And here's another thing: Just imagine the same scenario as in Galaxy Quest, where that alien corpse hits the window like an insect hitting a wind screen, and the captain goes wtf? If you blow up someone's ship, there's bound to be floating dead people. And they wanted us to believe the Feds weren't the least bit curious about their enemies? Yeah right, sure.
