Why was Wesley staioned at the Conn

It's perfectly reasonable. So that they could set up the conn officer in Galaxy Quest.

I've always thought the only problem with Wesley is they often wrote him like he was 12 years old, not a teenager. After Wil left, they wrote him more like a young adult for his guest shots, when they should have been doing that more often.

Easy- It's likely how Picard started right out of Academy. He probably was no Harry Kim. He has talked about being a pilot int he past.

Wesley got to do what he did due to the power of a bad conscience.

Picard boinked Dr Crusher and then got her husband killed. Stuff like that will make you do things.

I'm still at a loss why he's in Nemesis. There's nothing but like five single frames of him being there and nobody talked to him at all and there's no explanation for him being there, in universe.

So, because he's there, maybe Nemesis is another dimension?

Makes more sense with his speaking scene (which was cut)

Wesley on the bridge was an insult to every hard working officer who strives in their careers to be there. It's madness!

If I was an officer who got assigned to the Enterprise and was stymied by the Doctors kid getting all the good shifts when all the action happens, and I had to go to Starfleet Academy while this kid gets handed the job because of nepotism, I'd be in Tenforward complaining to my peers every chance I got and looking for a transfer.

Exactly! There should have been a story about the trained professionals that Wesley displaced -- their bitterness, their resentment, their plans for murder. Think of the Frank Grimes episode of The Simpsons, but not funny because it's Star Trek: The Next Generation. :)

Why would anyone be jealous that Wesley piloted the ship sometimes? That's like being jealous of a rookie chauffeur.

I agree, and incidentally it's really saying something when a random fifty second appearance with no dialogue makes more sense than the explanation they actually gave him. :D

My attitude toward Wesley pretty much followed a bell curve. I didn't care for him at all in his earlier appearances, but later on I didn't mind him so much. In particular, I thought "The Game" was a good instance of him saving the ship without being obnoxious about it.

Unfortunately, the downward trend started with "The First Duty" (which IMO prefigures the Red Squad nonsense) and by the time he was mouthing off at Picard in his last appearance the character had squandered my goodwill. I don't believe being "special" should be any sort of excuse for being an obnoxious prat.

No actual Starfleet officers' careers were harmed in the making of these episodes.

On top of it, the kid IS swarmy, akward, and lame. Obviously this Captain plays favorites, and I'm not gonna be on a ship with that kid at the controls, thank you! I want a transfer.

Permission denied. Suck it up.

Fortunately, others in the crew understand that it is a meritocracy and that careers hinge not on how others get promoted, but by your own merits, no matter how young or old, and that there are plenty of opportunities for anyone who wants to risk their life in space. They are further motivated by the chance given to Wesley for having gotten his opportunity to grow and experience a "pattern of success," as Picard puts it. Petty jealously and bickering (except for Mrs. Troi) is a thing of the past, or so they say. The first thing those who hear your complaint might think is "why is he wasting time talking to me about this instead of doing something more motivational." I think you'd find yourself alone in the negativity.

I'm glad the rest of the crew didn't see it this way.

I'm going to have to emphatically but respectfully disagree with you on that one.

You forget, Star Fleet is also a meritocracy that sees to the need of its people, and Picard recognized that Wesley could be an incredibly huge benefit to Star Fleet.

Do you really want a person like Wesley being delegated to being a janitor all his life just because people are envious of his intelligence, or would you rather have them being productive members of a society?
