Why was the movie pushed back to May?

Did anyone ever find out why this movie was pushed back the only thing I remember on this subject was that Paramount made the decision and not J.J. Abrams.

Money was the main reason given at the time. They thought they could make more with a May release than with a December date.

From back in February:

Variety is reporting that Paramount has pushed the release of the new Star Trek movie from Christmas 2008 to May 8, 2009. Apparently the reason is to go for bigger box office during the summer season. Variety quotes a studio insider saying “Star Trek has the potential to gross more in May than in December.”

Also, there was a long writers strike, and things were looking thin for summer blockbusters for all the studios, so ST was seen as a good movie to shift from Christmas to the US summer. I did see messages about that, although Wikipedia currently claims that was never a reason.

Normally everything makes money at Christmas so I would of thought a December 26th worldwide release date would of gone down well. There is way more competition in the summer though at least STAR TREK is kicking off the summer box office but I fear T-4 could kill it.

IMO - It will turn out to be a good movie but will fall short of its huge budget simply due to the stigma of STAR TREK.

ILM ran out of leading zeroes for starship registries and had to wait for the factory in China to produce more.

And here I thought it was because they couldn't smuggle a bootleg copy of the film out to the chinese to sell on DVD the same day it's released in theartres in time for the original 12/26/08 release date.

Why was the movie pushed back to May?

The movie actually did come out on Christmas Day, 2008, but then the Old Spock came back from the future and, through the power of (most awesome) quantum theory, the movie got pushed back to May of 2009, but in an alternate timeline.

So depending on which timeline you are currently in, the movie will either come out on Christmas Day, 2008, or in May of 2009. Or, alternatively, five minutes ago, tomorrow, 10000 BC, or a fried onion covered in blood.

Apparently, you have to watch some shitty episode of TNG to understand what I am saying.

...so in one of the other infinite number of universes, I will go to see this film on December 25, and it will be the best film ever made...and the "infinite monkeys tapping on typewriters" that wrote it will win the Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

To annoy and anger us. And it was completely successful.
In the future we will see more sequels pushed ahead of their respective dates to fuel the same cynicism and entitlement.

I'm glad it was pushed. I have for years hoped for a summer tentpole Trek film,
was a little disapointed when they announced it for Christmas, now it's all cool again.

Captain Robau demanded a little more warm up time before he kicked all of the detractors asses.
