Why Was Corps of Engineers Canceled?

I'm probably in the minority on this, but as a print book buyer, the move from MMPB to TPB turned me off the series.

It actually bothered me how the books were sorted on my shelves..


I don;t recall any explanation for the move (other than what I imagine - the ability to charge extra..)

Well, we do also get more stories in the TPBs. The MMPBs generally had four stories each, and the TPBs generally had six.

Bookstores like to order trade paperbacks because they get more profit from them per unit sold. That prompted publishers to put out more TPBs.

True, they are more expensive than the MMPBs, but it's still less expensive than getting them all as eBooks. And if you shop around you can get them for less. Out of the Cocoon and What's Past, for example, are both available at Amazon for $0.01 used. Even after the $3.99 shipping, that makes them half the price of a MMPB.

Mass Market Paperbacks (MMPBs) were taking up one of the MMPB slots each time a group of SCEs was due for release in hardcopy. Trade size omnibuses (like hardcovers) are marketed differently, and costed differently - and can be produced in much shorter runs. More expensive to buy, yes, but the publisher is not locked into the huge numbers that must be made (and then warehoused) if done as a MMPB. And, as Christopher said, shops like 'em (more profit), the royalty is higher (useful when being shared across numerous contributors?), and the books become better/larger items for gift-giving.

Note how the Pocket backlist of recent print-on-demand is also coming out in trade editions. Not enough copies would be sold for a MMPB run to be economical, but a trade edition is doable.
