Why the Ralph McQuarrie-inspired USS Discovery is an incredible design

I've been in Apple stores. Never figured out what possesses people to compare the Abrams ship to an Apple store. Thing looks more like a Best Buy, and it doesn't look like a Best Buy.

Same here. One looks like a perfectly functional starship design and the other I wouldn't be caught dead in and is overpriced on their product. I'll take Abrams' Enterprise all the way.

"I-Bridge" :rolleyes:

Perfectly functional? With all those exposed, eye-level lights?!

I've always thought 'beauty-salon' would be a more accurate analogy, but even they don't seem to have such a hard-on for migraine-inducing illumination!

I remember when Best Buys looked like actual stores, they had so much more selection then. This is why retail is dying.

Interestingly, to my eye, the examples presented thus far of the Apple store, Best Buy, the NuEnt bridge and the beauty salon all display the streamlined modernist design aesthetic that really came into its own in the sixties. I would say Ikea is another example.

They have a pill for that in the future ;)

Also, having seen the different 3d experiences of that bridge, if lighting is the only complaint, then I can live with that, as that can be adjusted.

Yeah ... by pulling them entirely. Actually, there was an image of the bridge released early on with fewer 'doo-dads' and none of the extra lighting that looked amazing. I don't know if that was just a conceptual rendering or an early shot of the bridge before someone decided to add more junk. Get rid of the lights, and it's not a bad set.

Yup. Other than the lights (which are clearly an artistic choice and have nothing to do with functionality) that Bridge is perfectly workable as a command center, and is my favorite Bridge. :)

The final USS Discovery looks like the goth version of the Ralph McQuarrie concept, all in black and with stretchers in the saucer:rommie:

I wonder if they like 45 rpm records on Discovery?
