Why the hate for Disco?

I enjoyed it. I enjoyed a story arc driven trek as opposed to the episodic ones. I enjoy that the franchise has modernised and moved with the times. I’ve read a lot of reviews and feedback about missing 26 episode series and it “not being real trek”
I don’t get it, this is a modern trek for a modern times. I mean sure we all would have wanted something different and it’s far from perfect. But I for one don’t miss the standard holodeck/stuck in the transporter/let’s build the captain a new chair episodes.
The new series need to compete with a totally new TV landscape. Disco, and Picard are doing that.
But then I am a fanboy.

Don’t pay too much attention to reviews. The ones with the most views are usually the negative ones because negativity gets more clicks. It’s by no means an indication of the quality of Disco. There’s a very vocal fan group that likes to bash the new Trek shows whenever and wherever possible. It’s - sadly - a thing in a lot of fandoms these days where fans with an obsession of how things used to be when they were young wear rose-tinted nostalgia glasses and refuse to accept that times have changed. That’s basically all there is to this whole “NOT MY TREK” screaming.

I don't know how much of the haters fall into this category, but I see so much of it on Facebook that it is the first thing I think of when I think of the haters. They hate Disco because the lead is female. They can't handle the trans elements. They body shame Tilly. They are just gross people so it is better to avoid them.

I was concerned about this aspect yes. All of that plus the relationship between stamets and the good doctor. Rodenberry’s utopia seems very selective it seems

I’m glad to have found this board, I thought it was just me whole liked having new Trek. I presume the viewing figures are decent if they keep getting more seasons. Anyone know?

These people who hate the show -- not to be confused with those who are just critical of it -- come in three major groups:

There's the Fandom Menace, who are mostly the bigots. The sexists, the racists, and the homophobes. The ones who are most likely to take YouTube hate channels like Midnight's Edge and Doomcock as gospel.

There are the Gatekeepers. The "Star Trek 1966-2005" types who kiss the ground Gene Roddenberry and Rick Berman walked on, even though they didn't like most of it at the time it was actually being made (despite what they'll say or however they'll try to deny it now).

Then there are the Bitter Ex-Fans who are just pissed off that they didn't get the series they wanted.

I generally disregard The Fandom Menace. They're not people I want to have a discussion of any sort with. The Gatekeepers and the Bitter Ex-Fans (with some exceptions), I'll argue different points with. I'll discuss things with them. I won't discuss anything with The Fandom Menace.

Thing is, it's very successful. You don't commission multiple spin-off shows from an unpopular show.

That means that overwhelmingly people like it. This isn't public service broadcasting - if it doesn't generate enough income it's toast.

So, very popular. Extremely popular. It's enough to make you wonder if all the negativity is exactly representative isn't it ?

And wonder if the negativity is actually coming from an overly loud, overly entitled minority of ignorant small minded racist misogynist dickheads.

Got to admit, it's a possibility !

You’re already way ahead of the Fandom Menace people - they keep claiming the show has been canceled despite it getting more and more seasons. And yes, while exact numbers are elusive (a normal thing for streaming services), it is safe to assume that Disco is successful enough since it keeps getting renewed.

They're the Qanon of Star Trek fans.
And they've been at it for years, I remember JJ Abrams being put on "secret Hollywood trial" for embezzlement because Star Trek Into Darkness (whose $190 million budget is right up there on screen for all to see) ACKTUALLY only cost $66 million and JJ pocketed the rest

I’ve also seen them claim that CBS is only making new episodes/seasons “to save face”. Yup. They throw out millions of dollars because they’re embarrassed. Totally logical reasoning.

Because lots of people don't like the show and it's fun to complain about it and some people do like it but it's still fun to complain about it because complaining about stuff is one of humans favorite past times. People even love to complain about people complaining about stuff.

Both extremes are pretty tiresome. I see a lot of mindless hate for DSC but also a lot of reactionary gatekeeping and handwaving for it when people raise perfectly reasonable issues (which I won't get into for that very reason). It's far from perfect, like most of Trek, but DSC is flawed for a very specific and unusual reason* - it was established as a provocative effort to revive Trek and ring in the changes (which I was fine with) and then ditched its showrunner and attempted to course-correct in season 2 (which I was OK with), before finally evolving into a largely different show in season 3 (which I enjoyed). I like DSC, and I much prefer it to Picard, but I am not blind to its issues.

*For me, Voyager almost falls into the same category, being pitched as a 'Lost in Space' Trek series but rapidly turning into TNG Redux. But I think that's significantly different to the DSC situation as it kept the same people in charge. You could argue that TNG was set up as something very different from TOS and fell more into that mould after season 1, but again, it kept the same people at the helm, and I think DSC's need to reinvent itself was much more pressing and radical.

Those shows don't need to compete with anyone, just produce the best show which fits its own identity. It'll find its audience and those trolling reviews wont matter at all because fans of those things will ignore them. When fans enjoy them, then who cares what fake critics think??? These shows were not made for everyone's liking and when there's issues with the show it should be judged by its own merit. If you like theses things then don't read or listen to feedback, no reason to be upset when viewers see the series differently.
