Why so few 3rd doc DVD's?

Terror of the Autons hasn't been released because it only exists in black-and-white and needs too much restoration work. As for Planet of the Spiders, well - I'm right there with you! :)

Correction: Terror exists in colour, but in the same reconstructed-from-two-sources form as Silurians (which has been released) and Daemons and Ambassadors of Death (which haven't).
So it could be released, but yes, it ideally needs work, as the current reconstruction was done 16 years ago, and a far better result could be produced now by redoing it, either by the improved version of the same method (as on Silurians), or possibly by using the new colour-recovery technique used on Planet of the Daleks 3 (possibly as the B&W film prints can't always be used for this: if the technician making the B&W copy did his job properly and put in the widget to remove the colour information, then there's nothing there to recover).
I don't know where the hell my brain went when I wrote that - not only did I know that Terror had been re-colored, I actually own the ancient VHS release of said restored episode! :alienblush: That said, there probably would need to be more restoration required to make a DVD release possible, as you said.

Aye. It's missing "Day of the Daleks" and "Death to the Daleks".

The only reason that "Frontier in Space" and "Planet of the Daleks" are being marketed together is because the ending of the one serial directly flows into the beginning of the next.

I hope they sell the disks seperatel because man oh man, 'Planet' is just the biggest cure for insomnia ever. It really is just a Hartnell story slightly updated.

Just to prove BBC Video isn't forgetting about Pertwee, they've just announced the release of the two Peladon stories as a box set in 2010, along with Mind of Evil.

Note this refers only to the UK release, though unless there's some weird licensing issue we don't know about, I'd assume Region 1 release for these a few months later.

I'm not sure what is meant by the "revisiting" of older box sets, if that's referring to the Pertwees specifically or if a double-dip on some of the other Doctors is imminent.

Jeez whats with all the box sets lately? Are they just trying t get the complete series out faster?
Grouping stories by theme is a good way to sell more copies of truly terrible stories.

While there are a few of the lesser stories being released this way, true, the fact is it just makes sense to group related stories together. The Peladons are considered classics (yeah I know Alpha Centauri looked silly, but no more so than the Gorn in Star Trek). It's not a case of grouping terrible stories together - it's a matter of providing people with complete storylines in one shot, just like the Key to Time and Beneath the Surface sets (and those stories were undeniable classics). Boxing is also helpful for releasing some of the shorter stories (2 episodes) that people might not bother with otherwise, which is why Edge of Destruction (another classic) was appended to the The Beginning set.

And in answer to Cutter John's comment, I do believe that is the case as well because the DVD format only has a few more years left to it and, frankly, most of the older DWs won't translate well to high-def Blu-Ray, so BBC Video probably wants to get them all out there before the final changeover happens. Expect to see a lot of other older shows being ramped up too. While there are a few occasional surprises such as The Prisoner being remastered for Blu-Ray, I doubt we'll be seeing, say, Adam 12 or Bonanza (two ongoing series releases that come to mind) being redone.

Guess that makes sense, though I wish if they were going to do boxes they'd just go ahead and do more season sets rather than stuff like the recent 'Below the Surface' and 'Davros' boxes that lumped different Doctors together. I'm one of those nerds who likes to put his disks in sequential order. So I'd end up having to toss a perfectly good box. :(

Yeah it's annoying. I've had to discard the Below The Surface & K9 Set boxes just to have everything in proper order.

On the subject of double-dipping I suspect that Spearhead from Space will get a special edition release at some point given that its the first Pertwee/Colour episode.

The revisiting is for stories like Robots Of Death & Spearhead From Space which were early releases and didn't have the full range of extras that they've put on later releases. Plus I think they can now improve the picture quality.

It's supposed to be a box set with those two plus Caves, Talons & Tomb.

I think they've found that the box sets sell better than the individual releases which is presumably why we've had so many lately.

I too would love to see more Pertwee stories out on DVD, especially Terror Of The Autons and The Mind Of Evil.
