Why not Pike and Una?

DarKush

In "The Cage" the Talosians exposed that Number One (Una) had some romantic feelings for Pike. However, Strange New Worlds has done nothing with that. When I think about how fond this series is of hooking up characters, it is strange (pun intended) that they haven't plucked this thread. Even if only to tease it like Jean-Luc and Beverly on TNG, Janeway and Chakotay on VOY, or Archer and T'Pol on ENT. Any thoughts on why they haven't revisited Number One's feelings for Pike?

The female you call Number One has the superior mind and would produce highly intelligent children. Although she seems to lack emotion, this is largely a pretence. She often has fantasies involving you.

Maybe the Talosians can't distinguish between wanted and unwanted thoughts, past and current interest, dreams and conscious desire, etc.

Number One and Colt were plan B and plan C for the Talosians. They didn't even know which was B and which was C, and they'd had to work to get Pike interested in their plan A, which wasn't working to suit their needs. Ergo, while Una's fantasies were something that they thought they could cultivate into full blown interest, that was hardly a sure bet. These are natural conclusions from "The Cage", just as it was.

Perhaps the Talosians thought they could provoke jealousy in Vina, leading her to try harder to romance Pike, or at least provide him with the illusion of choice with people (vaguely, in Colt's case) familiar to him, rather than a manufactured illusory woman.

To be more specific, the Talosians don't say that Number One has romantic feelings for Pike. They say that she often has fantasies involving him. So she may not want a relationship, just that she finds him attractive and imagines doing nasty stuff sometimes. "Involving" ...so for all we know she has fantasies about multiple people at once. No crime there. :)

In-universe, Batel was in the way. And by the time Batel was gone, Una seemingly reignited something with Doug. There was no time (remember Doug cured Pike of his Vulcan transformation while Pike was still with Batel---Batel chewed Pike out for suddenly being buddies with Vulcans in that same episode, she hadn't ascended to godhood or whatever yet).

That said there's a good 5 years between Cage and SNW and it's not clear when Batel entered the picture or if she already was in the picture as of Cage so I'll concede that.

I think the bigger question now is what happens to Una after SNW.

Wow, that's what we need. More shipping among the crew, this time between the captain and first officer! That's almost as good an idea as that trip down to Haiti for the unprotected sex!

Una and Pike did have a go at it after Cage but she forgot to warn him about her augment strength. It's why she only dates Vulcans who are sturdier than humans like Doug. It was so bad that afterwards Pike needed reconstructive surgery and afterwards he looked more like Black Bolt from Inhumans than how he used to look.

Pike was torn between Una and Yeoman Colt by the end of "The Cage".

Modern day sensibilities means Pike does not have to choose either; he could have both. But the original intent was that Pike had to choose one or the other. If the Colt in DIS was the same Colt in "The Cage", then maybe Pike was still deciding by then.

Maybe being attached to Batel was Pike’s way of trying to have both, without having to actually choose.

 Good gods, not at all.

Pike and Batel were not in an exclusive relationship I just remember. He slept with that Majalan woman while he was technically still in a relationship with Batel. It only became exclusive later on I think?
