Why Not Copy The Look of the Original Series More Closely?

Dayton3

Admiral
The Star Trek: Enterprise two part mirror universe episode featured the original Constitution class Defiant (the one that vanished in the Original Series "The Tholian Web") very heavily.

The second part of the two parter is set aboard the Defiant with the main cast members wearing original series uniforms and the interiors of the ship copying ST:OS VERY closely.

Not to mention the external views of the Defiant.

I was surprised.

The look of the original series worked extremely well on the modern television screen.

Given that, why doesn't this Trek movie more closely copy the look of the original?

I think "In a Mirror, Darkly" was basically there as a homage to the Original Series rather than trying to update it.

As for the new film, even the TOS films decided to update the sets as they thought it would have looked a bit dodgy up there on the big screen. Sticking to the original series look is good for fan films which are intended purely for those who like Star Trek already, but to a wider audience it would have just looked naff.

Because they wanted to create a separate and new Star Trek, and the best way to do that is to make it look different. (although they wanted to re-use the TOS characters for because they thought the box office take would be more favorable by re-using them)

Because this Universe was entered via means never done before; a black hole. That's how I am going to rationalize it.

I think the purpose was they wanted the bridge to have a lighter and brighter look. Almost a deliberate contrast to all the dark motiffs out there. Also, a deliberate contrast to the Kelvin's bridge. It's not my favorite thing (though I think engineering is worse). I would've liked to have seen something a little truer to the TOS bridge, but they never asked me. Damn it, they never asked me!

Why not copy the original look of the show? Because it would be laughed off the screen.

What evidence do you have of that?

Updating the look of the original for ST:TMP made sense because you were looking at a passage of time both onscreen and in real life.

That does not necessarily apply to the current movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm glad they didn't make it look like the original; I think it would have looked campy if they had.

Does it really matter though???? The timeline is altered in this film hence the different look.(Thats how the producers are explaining it away) When the timeline is restored it will revert back. Of course that wont happen until this new set of films is exhausted.

Yeah...there is just no way that's ever gonna happen. EVER.

I remember when they started talking about Ent -- I was so excited...a prequel to TOS!!!!!!!! I thought it would have the same feel, look...I mean it HAD TO since it occured before TOS.....but then I thought...there is NO WAY that they're gonna green light a TOS style set etc....when they have resources to "do so much more" ...sure enough I saw previews of ENT and instantly dismissed it because it looked waaaaaaaay too modern and I said nope I'm not just buying into this because the star trek name is attached to it......they wanna do a pre TOS show..then it better friggin look that way...so I've never watched it and they lost me as a viewer before the damn thing even began.

Same thing with this movie -- but we just have to be realistic...they are not going to purposely try to look like the TOS era when they have much more at their disposal.....they are just not going to do it.. EVER. So we must banish that from our minds because it's never going to happen.

Exactly. Even though all of the movies after the run of the 1969 series took place in Star trek's "future" the fact remains they even then they realized they could not just go with the look of the show or it would have looked outdated and ridiculous.

According to Chambliss, they did three versions of the Enterprise bridge design - one that was vastly different from the original, one that was much closer and this one. They decided that they were bored by the one that most closely mimicked the TOS design.
