Good god!

The universe would implode if anything that bad were ever produced!

2) No A-List actor would probably ever do it because sci-fi is so maligned by "mainstream" audiences.

Often justifiably so. Just because it's SF doesn't mean that it's good. When a SF script comes along that is something out of the ordinary, it can get "name" actors.

Look at Dark City, with Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, and Keifer Sutherland. And Matrix (I try not to think of the sequels) pulled in Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne. Robin Williams did that cloying Asimov piece with a name that escapes me, and Will Smith has done his share.

Much as I love SF, many of the films are dreck. (And books, but that's a different topic.) The one truly great Trek film was decades ago. You can't expect people to sign up to work for any old SF film, even though sometimes they have a brain fart (I'm looking at you, Dame Judi Dench) and do so.

Unfortunately, SFF often has a low-brow reputation. That's really sad for the gleaming moments of genius that the genre has given us, as they don't get the attention they deserve, but let's not pretend that a lot of the scorn hasn't been earned.

Are science fiction films any more likely to be crap than romantic comedies? Than pretentious, anvilicious 'serious drama' flicks? Than torture porn?

I think it was Sturgeon who said 90% of everything is crap. I don't think SF deserves scorn because it fails to be an exception to that rule.

Back on topic, I don't see it as a big advantage. I prefer an ensemble cast - which this works against. And using A-list stars implies a heavy focus on movies, and I place far greater importance on the TV format- that's what most entertains me.

- Robin Williams was going to do TNG's episode - A Matter of Time, I think. He would have played Berlinghoff Rasmussen. I don't know why he had to bow out, though.
Due to his working on HOOK at the time IIRC it is stated in the T.N.G. Companion

Dame Judith Anderson in ST III?

It was a favour to her Trekker nephew(s), who badgered her, and she was impressed by Nimoy's professionalism.

I was thinking it was Dame Judi Dench, and the remark was about The Chronicles of Riddick.

Captain Christopher Pike - Ray Liotta
The rest of the suggestions in this post seem to be obvious jokes, but this is actually a pretty cool idea. Liotta does actually look a lot like an older Pike, probably more than the actor chosen to play him in the new Star Trek movie.

Is Ashley Judd A-list now? Bring back Robin Leffler! The first Starfleet Captain in a catsuit!

I heard there was some kidding around when "Nemesis" came out about her making a cameo at Riker's wedding as Wesley's wife. Lettermen apparently teased her by showing footage from her performance in "The Game" without her expecting it. I am saddened by the fact that this idea was never carried through seriously. It would have made me (and I bet a lot of fans) SO happy. The two of them were the cutest couple! :luvlove:

IIRC, when people investigated it, this whole thing was an IMDb fan fantasy concocted by a fanatic hoaxer called Scavenger - but not the same Scav who hangs out here.

When people did a little digging, the date for the supposed "Letterman" interview was totally false, and there really was never a plan for her to cameo in "Nemesis", nor be married off to Wesley. Someone also filled the NEM cast list on IMDb with every actor and actress who'd ever played a Romulan on TOS and TNG.

Interesting. Seems that other films have the tendency to interfere here...That Thing You Do! kept Tom Hanks out of ST:FC, The Golden Child did the same for Eddie Murphy and ST IV, and now this...

Oh, and I fixed the attributions of MY above quote. ;)

Tom Hanks
George Clooney
Samuel L Jackson

all 3 would make GREAT Starfleet Characters but I would love to see

Halle Berry as Captain and Hugh Jackman as her 1st officer!!!!

Much like the Female CO of the SARATOGA in TVH?
