Why no starfighters?

Shuttles have taken damage from capital ships weapons before and survived.
Granted that they can withstand only several hits, but still, send 15 to attack a capital ship, and one volley out of 15 shuttle sized fighters would probably be enough to inflict enough damage before any fighters are lost.
You would do much better just firing 15 torpedos. Besides as the original post complained shuttles are too big, not proper fighters like X-wings. His Luke Skywalker is not all alone with the skin of his craft practically molded around him.

Umm, to be sure, the full-scale prop for the X-wing is quite a bit larger than the one for the Type 6 shuttle. The CGI for the B5 Starfury or the Last Starfighter, ditto.

Torpedoes are useless if you have a decent projectile defense, because they have no capacity to think for themselves. It's the same reason we don't rely solely on ballistic warheads today in place of support craft.

It would have been cool seeing some launched from the bay of the Enterprise E as she swooped into battle the Borg Cube in First Contact.
