Why no spinoffs under moffat?

We had Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures and the Aussie K9 series all under RTD, yet we've had nothing under Moffat. Is he not interested in expanding the show or are the BBC still trying to save pennies?

As far as I am aware the Aussie K9 series, had nothing to do with RTD or the BBC.

I'd rather have no spin-offs if they are just doing one for the sake of doing one. There has to be something it adds.

But what sort of spin-offs do you think they could do?

The only conceivable one would be a kid's show with the (urgh) 'Paternoster Gang'

If the BBC could find the money and wanted a spin-off that Moffat couldn't produce, they would hire someone else to produce it. So, I think the current lack of spin-offs is circumstantial and budgetary, rather than Moffat's unwillingness to do it. (And I wouldn't really count the K-9 series. Yes, it's a spin-off, but the Beeb has nothing to do with it.)

In 2006/7, the BBC was a little more flush with money. In the last few years, they're looking for coproduction partners on everything, and they're putting money into new properties. If BBC America or another network put together a proposal for an American-geared spin-off series, I don't know that it would be rejected out of hand. It may not be produced, but they would at least hear out the idea.

If there is a new spin-off, I'd like to see it move away from the "Doctor Who minus the Doctor" format of Torchwood and Sarah Jane. I thought you could have built a medical series around Martha (or put her on a series like Casualty or Holby City). Or a sitcom about Craig and Sophie and Stormageddon. Or maybe something like State of Play in the Whoniverse.

It would be nice to have something in the Who downtimes. Part of it might be that it is just easier to do when the show (or at least revival) was young in the same way that we also used to have Doctor Who Confidential and Totally Doctor Who.

Or The River Song Adventures...

Simply bring back Torchwood. Is still salvageable. Might as well make that the American version of Doctor Who made by BBCA, but not sucky and drawn out like Miracle Day.

Or maybe an American reboot of Doctor Who? Could be set on a parallel universe to the UK version.

Or maybe an adult UNIT spin-off? My mother thinks this is a good idea. Could be a bit like an adult Primeval but without the dinosaurs and with aliens instead. Maybe with Kate Stewart as the head, but a young team that sort of sorts out alien stuff (like Connor and so on in Primeval with dinosaurs) would be the main characters. Not sure if this would even need to be aimed at adults or just the same universal age group as the main show.

It always seems like UNIT gets the short end of the stick. I'd love to have a UNIT show.

Can someone explain to me the jurisdictional difference between UNIT and Torchwood? And Sarah Jane, for that matter?

UNIT is an international Task Force created to defend Earth in an official capacity.

Torchwood is a Black OPs organization created by Queen Victoria created to defend England and the crown from the supernatural and aliens.

Sarah Jane is a citizen who doesn't give a damn about gouvernment interference and just does what the Doctor taught her to defend everyone from evil aliens.

nitpick wasn't Torchwood created by Queen Victoria to defend the United Kingdom and her Empire?

Moffat already has a full plate with Doctor Who and Sherlock, I doubt he has the time or will to devote to another show.

Besides, the spin-offs seemed more RTD's thing, and I believe he was quoted as saying he would milk the franchise for all it was worth. Hell, we nearly had a spin-off about Rose defending Pete's World.

Yeah, we never had spinoffs before RTD, so it's reasonable to not expect them now. Moffat has a lot on his plate and probably doesn't want to spend the time and effort creating a spinoff as well. In addition, BBC has been cutting back resources in original dramas so it would have to be a worthwhile investment. The Paternoster Gang could work, but I'm not sure BBC sees the point, I'm not sure Moffat wants to handle it right now, and, besides, they might just work better in limited guest appearances.

Team then up with Jack Harkness and River Song and you have...

TORCHWOOD: VICTORIAN LONDON

No need for River, but I'd be down for that!

(Though, Barrowman and Kingston are currently involved with Arrow..)

I really just want Jack and River to have at least one episode together because I think those two characters would be hilarious. But yeah, she wouldn't be necessary for the show as a whole.

As much as I like the characters, I'll agree they would probably work better as recurring guests on Doctor Who than as stars of their own spin-off. Hell, on Doctor Who I could see their roles expanding eventually becoming something like modern day equivalents of the Brigadier and UNIT.

But why don't we see UNIT and Torchwood showing up at the same time when something happens in England? How do they know who responds to what? And how come they never show up on the things that Sarah Jane investigates?

As someone who loved all the RTD spinoffs, I'm glad there isn't any under Moffat. It was getting to be a pain to find time to watch all of them.
