can't more bridges and tunnels be built to go into New York City ?
having a bridge or tunnel entering NYC at 23rd Street, 14th street and another tunnel running from the bottom of the FDR drive going directly to tne end of Atlantic Avenue would be terrific.

Any particular reason you need a thread for every NY river-related idea that pops into your head?

No kidding. Only 5 active topics on this board and 3 of them are about NYC river/bridges...

Manhattan Island cannot support any additional vehicular traffic. The City planners have been trying to dissuade the use of automobiles by the rank and file for years by limiting access to the island to non-commercial traffic, while increasing the ease of access through public transportation. Look at the amount of money that is being expended on extending subway service to the city, including the construction and reconstruction of numerous lines and stations.

Besides, adding additional tunnels and bridges is too expensive for the number of people and goods that can be transported on and off the island by rubber to asphalt means. Transportation by rail is more efficient since you can move more over or through one structure rather than a multitude that require constant maintenance.
