Why no mor in series Enterprise Novels

^you're probably thinking of that Laurel K. Hamilton TNG reprint from a few years ago. 2010 maybe?

For what it's worth, I'm definitely a fan of moving the narrative along as opposed to retreading the series timeframes.

At this point the only reason I'd want a story set during the series runs of any of the shows other than TOS is just to see how our current batch of authors would handle the era. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the post TV/Movie series novels.

Although, next year for the 50th anniversary, I'm thinking a cool celebration would be to release a new novel for all the TV series set during the series run. Just an idea.

Fantastic idea. Didn't Pocket do something along these lines for other anniversaries? The Crucible and String Theory trilogies for TOS and Voyager anniversary years respectively?

It's the 50th anniversary next year? Dear gods, I remember when it was the 40th.

I'm getting old...:wtf:

I don't really see the need for novels taking place outside of each series "present day". I can think of only a few exceptions. I'd love to see a sequel to/ the aftermath of Star Trek: Insurrection. That movie has been almost totally ignored in the Lit-verse. There are dangling threads to various Enterprise episodes that could be picked up again during the time frame of the later seasons, though they could easy be touched on by Christopher's masterful work in Rise of the Federation. And I'd never argue against a Pike story.

Funny you should mention that . . . :)

Finishing up a Pike novel this week. CHILD OF TWO WORLDS, due out at the end of the year.

I'm guessing you're allowed to talk about it, seeing as you just mentioned it and all.

I only ask because you've said in the past that you couldn't talk about projects you were working on.

I have a 25th anniversary belt buckle somewhere. And fond memories of a 25th anniversary t shirt I wore the life out of.

I agree with the sentiment of the original post, as for me, TNG TV years and the Movie Era is where Trek began for me really. (ok....I did read the James Blish adaptations even before that, but you know what I mean.)

Yeah, that's where I got the idea. Nice way to have the novels celebrate the anniversary and bring in casual fans of the shows who aren't inclined to immerse themselves in the various post-finale developed continuities.

Besides, such a project need only take up five months, leaving seven months open to Typhon Pact stories, new DS9 and Voyager, Rise of the Federation, The Seekers and so on.

Depends on whether it's already been announced or not. Margaret Clark mentioned it in an interview a while ago, and I believe that S&S is already advertising it.

It also depends on whether or not a proposal has been already been approved by CBS or not. I'm not likely to talk about a possible project until it's a done deal.

And movie novelizations, of course, demand a much higher level of secrecy than a standalone novel because the studio doesn't want you to spoil the plot of $200 million movie! :)

I think the main focus of the 50th is likely to be TOS itself, both because that's the specific series having its anniversary and because it's the best-selling series in the line. It'd be nice to have a full-franchise celebration in there somewhere, but the year will probably center on TOS.

Anyway, we'll have TNG's 30th coming up in 2017 and DS9's 25th in 2018, so maybe we'll have something more specific for them in those years.

You could always do a story set partially during a series run with events that shape later events but most of us like the idea of carrying things forward. TOS may be the exception because it's constrained to a set time period by canon events like the disappearance of Kirk. Go beyond that and it's not TOS anymore, it's "Lost Era".

Still, you've got the 5YM timeframe, the movie era and the time between to play with.

But since we're unlikely to see any more produced visual Trek concerning ENT, TNG, DS9, or VOY, keep telling us what happens after the series events.

As to TOS as best-selling series that doesn´t apply to countries outside US territory. It has been much discussed on the Cross Cult Forum why it is so. There are also TOS fans in Germany. But due to bad number of sales, they release only one TOS novel per year, otherwise it would be money-losing business. So resort to the originals. Tough for non-English speaking fans.

When Christopher says "best-selling series", I think he means across the entire market worldwide; adding up sales for all Trek books collectively rather than considering any one specific country.

Though what is the top-selling series in Germany if not TOS, out of curiosity?

And as much as I say I prefer novels that move the story forward, those were fantastic books. But then they also in their own ways did move the characters past their tv stories. String Theory fixed some major problems I had with Voyager, particularly the horrible treatment of Kes in Fury. I'd be all for more books like those.
