Why is the acting in STD so WOODEN?

I noticed the same thing, from the officer who stands at attention, looks at the captain directly, and states that a Klingon ship's nearby, to the weird explanation of the magic spores followed by profanity, to even the conversation between the Shenzhou captain and Burnham. I think they're trying to follow TNG dialogue but sprinkling it with something lively, and the result's weird.

She argued her position with Lorca well enough, but did anyone think for one minute she wasn't going to go on the mission? She goes on all of them. She is the lead, ergo she goes on the missions. Her puffing herself up to Kol was a joke.

You may think so, but I don't agree. Burnham killed T'Kuvma the Unforgettable singlehandedly. Thus, she was worthy of Kol's attention. She was correct to think he'd be prideful enough to want to defeat her in combat to fluff up his own importance.

She shot him in the back, which would have made her dishonorable scum unworthy of Kol's attention.

I thought it was funny when Kol tossed her and she fell like a pro-wrestler in a staged fight. So she gets up and charges all her mighty weight at him. Ooooh that must've hurt. He would've squashed her like a bug.

The show had some wooden issues early on but I feel they have sorted that for the most part aside from the Klingons and the straight to DVD actors they hire as the Starfleet Admirals on their holo calls.
