It has action, romance, social commentary, exploration, character development, plot, new technology and lots of freedom to write about whatever you want.
Star Trek connects to my youth. I wouldn't say that it is my favorite hobby. I remember watching Next Generation in its first run, and that remains my favorite series, DS9 a close second, the Original Series, third. Why I like Star Trek now--it's introduction to college-level material for the novice, its interesting morals that gave me something to chew on in my entertainment--is not the reason I liked it before, say, 2009. I liked the Dominion War arc because of the perseverance. I liked the interesting characters. I liked the action-adventure scenes. The reason I like Best of Both Worlds, now, versus then, is the difference between the imagination of how to out-think the Borg, versus just our heroes facing down a big bad guy. So, while I have been a fan, off-and-on, since 1989, my reasons for liking it, are completely different then when I started.
My family emphasizes intelligence. I tried my hand at being a writer, was published a couple of times online, but never paid for any of it, and learned what it takes to take thought, put it to paper, and think about, choose, every word written. There is nothing I hate more than a predictable movie. I am drawn to tragedy--The Bicycle Thief, Atonement, the Godfather Trilogy, In The Bedroom, Black Swan, Good Will Hunting--outside of Star Trek. I see Star Trek as imaginative, now. That is why I prefer the original run of the first 3 shows, versus, say, the movies they are making now. I sit in awe of these writers--to do two weekly morality plays from 1993-1999, write movies, and keep Gene's vision alive with consistent characterization, appropriate themes, etc. The tonnage of work they did, is amazing to me.
So, I debate, I think about what they wrote, but I don't engage in the heavy-handed brow-beating for inconsistencies and ranking them, outside what I enjoy, now. I did, and it's out of my system.
Imagination. Morality Plays. Good writing from good writers. A connection to my past. That is what keeps me in Star Trek.
