Why is Star Trek Your Favorite Hobby?

All these things I agree with, however, the direction of the Star Trek universe is that it is going for somewhat dark, maybe not dystopian themes. What do you guys think of that? The world is a horrible place now, here comes World War III that the show has been talking about!!! :barf:

We've been expecting World War III for the whole of my life, and I'm over 50. I'm old enough to remember "duck and cover" drills in school.

I'm not saying people are wrong to fear it, but I am saying that it's not a new fear.

Who is "GoH?"
That's fanspeak for "Guest of Honor."

The conventions I attended years ago usually had multiple official guests - Fan GoH, Artist GoH, etc. as well as university professors, the occasional scientist willing to do a track of science programming, and local SF/F authors, but there were always one or two main Guests of Honor who were authors. There was one year when J. Michael Straczynski was invited, as well. I hadn't seen Babylon 5 at the time, but happened to drop by when he was showing the blooper reel. It was so funny that I decided to give the series a try.

Indeed, on this very site, I've posted STAR TREK poetry, in plenty - often with associated imagery - which I've enjoyed! Mostly, because it's as close to writing Fan Fiction as I'll ever get - and that's mainly due to the effort involved of constructing an entire novel, or even a short story. I would much rather turn those energies towards original projects, rather than Valentines to STAR TREK. Nevertheless, I find that this franchise is very versatile - it's anything you want it to be. And as far as any series would go, I find The Next Generation to be supremely satisfying. STAR TREK is one of those very rare avenues of entertainment which happen to remain relevant, with the passage of time. Others might include things like a simple deck of playing cards, or drawing, or even riding a bicycle. At Childhood's End, so much of what amused, or entertained peels away and its former appeal is very hard to understand. Not so with STAR TREK. There's nothing that even comes close to that nostalgia.

I was going to say "It's not a hobby, but...." then realised that being a board member of a fan club and making uniforms from scratch, I think it accidentally is.... and I'm not sure how that happened! :p

Aside from the entertainment, people I've met, friends made etc, ST was pretty much the only thing me and my dad could talk about. Even now we're in two different countries, and neither of us are big talkers, the mention of Trek can turn a two minute conversation into two hours.

Star Trek is certainly one of many hobbies I have and probably qualifies as my favourite winter hobby. I think I'm very lucky to have gotten in on the ground floor as a boy when TOS was airing. At that time, Kirk, Spock, Bones, the rest of the crew, Enterprise, and the stories just resonated with me. Still does. Very grateful for the series, the movies, and mostly now for all the books that keeps the adventure alive. I have enjoyed all Trek to some degree or another, but nothing like TOS.

I got into Star Trek because of the Klingon language, and reading, writing and speaking in Klingon is still my favorite Star Trek-related pastime, and one of my favorite things to do over all :)

It has action, romance, social commentary, exploration, character development, plot, new technology and lots of freedom to write about whatever you want.

Star Trek connects to my youth. I wouldn't say that it is my favorite hobby. I remember watching Next Generation in its first run, and that remains my favorite series, DS9 a close second, the Original Series, third. Why I like Star Trek now--it's introduction to college-level material for the novice, its interesting morals that gave me something to chew on in my entertainment--is not the reason I liked it before, say, 2009. I liked the Dominion War arc because of the perseverance. I liked the interesting characters. I liked the action-adventure scenes. The reason I like Best of Both Worlds, now, versus then, is the difference between the imagination of how to out-think the Borg, versus just our heroes facing down a big bad guy. So, while I have been a fan, off-and-on, since 1989, my reasons for liking it, are completely different then when I started.

My family emphasizes intelligence. I tried my hand at being a writer, was published a couple of times online, but never paid for any of it, and learned what it takes to take thought, put it to paper, and think about, choose, every word written. There is nothing I hate more than a predictable movie. I am drawn to tragedy--The Bicycle Thief, Atonement, the Godfather Trilogy, In The Bedroom, Black Swan, Good Will Hunting--outside of Star Trek. I see Star Trek as imaginative, now. That is why I prefer the original run of the first 3 shows, versus, say, the movies they are making now. I sit in awe of these writers--to do two weekly morality plays from 1993-1999, write movies, and keep Gene's vision alive with consistent characterization, appropriate themes, etc. The tonnage of work they did, is amazing to me.

So, I debate, I think about what they wrote, but I don't engage in the heavy-handed brow-beating for inconsistencies and ranking them, outside what I enjoy, now. I did, and it's out of my system.

Imagination. Morality Plays. Good writing from good writers. A connection to my past. That is what keeps me in Star Trek.

Star Trek fans are really hardcore and smart, that's why I assume that it is one of your top hobbies, being on a Star Trek board.

Though I am probably wrong in that hasty generalization. :vulcan:

Got any quatloos or gold-pressed latinum in your collection?

But there is a "gold-pressed" latinum (in real gilded pure silver) from the Perth Mint. I'm a coin collector too and try to collect all Star Trek coins, also the new released 50th anniversary high relief coins from the Perth Mint. Next month Delta shaped coins are coming in silver and gold. :luvlove:

Why Star Strek is my favorite hobby? I love those series and it always beamed me away to a better world for a short time. Seems in future we will have fights and crisis too but I hope that the human race wake up one day and has better goals like in the Star Trek universe.
