Why is he bowing to a mayor?

Now why don't you tell me what YOU think it means. I really am interested as to why he does this all the time. Is it because the Mayor appears to be Japanese?
 
It means nothing today. We're not Japan. We're not 16th century France. If it meant what you think it means it would mean that Conan O'Brien is everyone's personal slave since he bowed to everyone every night multiple times.

Twice. He's done this twice. I'm pretty sure Bush kissed a Saudi more than twice. I guess that means he's gay.

I asked you what YOU think it means. Not what I think it means. And if you think it means nothing that's fine. But if that's the case and it means nothing then why does he do it?
 
He does it because it's an empty greeting, a salutation. It's like a handshake.

This wasn't news the last time he did it and the right got their panties in a wad, it's not news now.

Um, he's already giving her a handshake so it must mean something else other than hello. Unless he says hello in multiple fashions at the same time? Kind of like "broadcast greetings in all know languages"?

Maybe he's in mid-bow on the way to or from kissing her hand?

I'm with Squiggy - who gives a crap? If he's meeting with dignitaries from a culture where it matters - like, say, Japan - then I might be concerned if he bowed deeper to their PM than the PM bows to Obama. But even then, not much. Everyone knows who has the military might to wipe them out if it were necessary, so if our president wants to be nice, so be it.
 
No. Lots of people shake hands and nod their heads. Especially if someone asks a question such as:

"Mr. President, did you have a good flight?"
Obama, nods head: "Yes I did, thank you."

When I nod in affirmation I don't stare at the other person's shoes. But that's just me.
 
You do know that a photograph is a snapshot of a specific moment in time right? It's not "live". How do you know he's staring?
 
What do I think it means? I think it means he's bowing as a greeting. I don't think he's grovelling or subserving.

But consider, Obama's a sci-fi buff. He's made BSG references before, and supposedly he moved the State of the Union so it wouldn't interfere with the premiere of Lost. I think he lurks here, saw that it made you mad, and now he's doing it on purpose. Right now, he's probably in his private study going, "Hey, Rahm and Joe, you gotta see this! That guy on TrekBBS who hates me is hating on me again! Aw, dang, that awesome Maestro guy figured it out."
 
I think it's meant as part of a greeting, if he's bowing at all (it's hard to tell from the picture).
