Why I Love George Takei

Dreadpiraterose:

Hey, that's a nice blog entry. Thanks for sharing. I always thought George Takei was the most approachable of the original series stars. BTW, look up his appearance at the William Shatner Roast on Comedy Central on YouTube. You will see another, raunchy yet fun-loving side to him.

I love George Takei because we share the same birthday. :p

Seriously, nice entry in your blog, dreadpiraterose. George is an old school Los Angeleno. Being one myself, even though I now live in Wisconsin, maybe that's one reason I, too, have always loved George. There is a casual grace to George that is all Los Angeles.

A nice, generous, real person. I always enjoyed talking with George. He had a sincere sense of humor, and really seemed to enjoy life!

My favorite thing he said was at the end, "I've waited forty years to say what I'm about to say: F**k you and the horse you rode in on!" :guffaw:-- RR

Has anyone else had a chance to meet him? What was YOUR experience like?

I had my first US trip in December '83/January '84 and, just before I left, a friend from interstate pleaded with me to deliver a book for George Takei to Bjo Trimble's house. (They had been grooming him to undertake an invitation to a convention, I think.) George used to live around the corner from Bjo in LA. Bjo got on the phone and organized for me to deliver the book in person!

Suddenly I was knocking on his front door and, just a suddenly, I was sitting in his lounge room drinking green tea and eating Piccolo wafers - opposite Mr Sulu!

Although I'd been told he had an unusual laugh, I'd never heard it. I told a few anecdotes about my travels and was witness to a sound akin to a dying seal, and realized I'd made Mr Sulu laugh!

Since then, I've had several other opportunities to attend dinners with George, show him around Sydney and work with him on convention stages. What amazes me is his patience and warmth, and his insistence, at fan-run conventions, that no one goes without a personalized autograph if they want one.
