Why I don't think remaking classic episodes would work

EJA

Even though at one time I liked this idea somewhat, I am now of the opinion that having future movies be remakes of TOS episodes wouldn't really work that well - at least not yet. My main reason being, if the next few movies only cover the first couple of years after XI, then the crew couldn't encounter any of the situations or characters from TOS, because the circumstances that led them to those characters and situations in the original timeline won't happen for several years in the new timeline. Say, for example, they wanted to do an updated version of Arena. In my mind, this would only really be feasible if they set it in the timeframe of the original episode, i.e. 2267, nine years after the events of XI, because the Gorn attack on Cestus III doesn't occur until then. Of course, this is all based on the assumption that the next few films will occur roughly in real time, i.e. XII is released in 2011 so, in the fictional universe's context, will take place around 2260, two years after XI (because XI came out in 2009). So I reckon totally original characters and situations would be better, at least until the films catch up with the TOS timeframe and they match up chronologically.

I agree but I have been fond of the idea of having the movie open with the crew, just getting done with going through a variation of a Classic ep. Image if the movie opened with the ship filled with tribbles and cyrano jones in the brig. The impression would be that the crew had just experienced a variation of "Trouble with Tribbles." Kirk gets a call from starfleet, because the yada, yada yada and the movie plot begins. It would be a nice nod to the show and a way to indicate that crew is out having adventures just like the TOS crew we are familiar with.

I think it was a messy mistake that they should give some serious thought of how to get out of it and back into the TOS timeline proper. There must be some way to fix it without too much damage.

I really don't think we have to worry too much about things like this. My feeling is that if it's a cool story they should do it. A bigger issue with remaking classic episodes is how do you turn a 45 minute episode into a two hour film?

We do need to get back to TOS years, but we need to take a good long stop at the ramifications of the improbabale promotion of Kirk. As showy and as good as the movie was, that is a sticking point the more I think about it.

I'd be open to this, but they better make it good. The only way I can think of that they can make two hrs of film out of episode seed without putting too much fluff in would be "The Menagerie" and related eps, but, given how Pike is now re-established, it wouln't work at all.

rehashing original episodes never works. It's a guarantee of rapid cancellation after about 4 episodes.

I think you can rehash anything and make it work IF its a good story and told well. It all comes down to the writing IMO..

eh, not really. Rehash to the trash. Back in the 90's, they did a very slick production of Dark Shadows with Ben Cross as Barnabas Collins. I quite enjoyed it, and would have truly loved it if it hadn't been a complete rehash of the original series.

I have a feeling that the overly rapid promotion could be used as a plot point in futher movies, for rivalries to develop between NuKirk and say either veteran ship captains (who view this guy as a rookie upstart) or other lower ranked officers (who are jealous of someone their age, or younger, getting a command before them).
