A hypernova could theoretically be an intense enough radiation emitter to sterilize inhabited planets for several thousand light years around, which would be close enough to "the entire galaxy" as far as the Federation and its neighboring civilizations are concerned. Although we now think a hypernova's radiation would most likely be emitted in two narrow jets from its magnetic poles, rather than spreading out spherically. But it's at least theoretically possible. More so than supernova radiation traveling faster than light, anyway.

My headcanon also factors in external interference - including but not limited to an extremely pissed off Borg Collective, who have not only lost their transwarp conduits but can no longer navigate by transwarp either.

I actually go with the idea Red Matter is the stuff which makes Romulan Drives work or something which the Federation has created from them.

And experiments with the stuff caused the Sun to explode.

Which, oddly enough, would go a long way to explaining why Nero was specifically pissed off at the Federation.

That theory put forth by the Encyclopedia (and Pegg) hasn't made it into a TV show or film, has it? Therefore, it doesn't exist. Simple as that.

That would have made a lot more sense, actually. I'm wondering why the EncycloPegg didn't just suggest that.

And unlike the curious notion that a change in the timeline can ripple into the past, it actually makes logical sense.

Sexual orientation isn't strictly genetic, though; it's believed to be influenced by epigenetic factors during gestation, such as the hormonal balance in the womb. Lots of things are influenced by epigenetics rather than DNA alone.

Anyway, sex researchers have known for generations that most people are at least a little bit bi, that there's a whole spectrum of preferences between purely same-sex and purely opposite-sex. You find a lot more people considering themselves open to going either way in cultural contexts that are more accepting of sexual diversity, like college campuses, or just the "Millennial" generation as a whole, than you will in cultures and generations with more rigid expectations about gender and sexuality. Some past cultures even considered bisexuality normal up to a point -- the Ancient Greeks and Romans considered it natural and expected for men to take adolescent male partners as well as adult female partners, although they expected those adolescent male partners to play a "feminine" role in the relationship.

So the same person with the same innate sexual preferences might be more or less aware of their preferences, or more or less willing to admit them, depending on the culture in which they're raised. Or they may feel the need to act against their preferences to conform to a cultural expectation. I get the sense that Mirror Universe society uses sex more as a power tactic than anything else, particularly in the case of someone like the Intendant. So it would be something you'd deploy against anyone you wanted to exert power over, regardless of their gender or your personal preference.

True, though while the people mentioned would seem to be a bit much when taken in a clump, it would nicely round Star Trek to be a bit more inclusive in (novel) canon characters.

Just my thoughts, obviously, and they're worth less than Federation credits.

Yes, but they never followed up because Klingons get no content.

On the other hand, I think the story is stronger where the answer is never really given. It's not a very Star Trek idea but it fits the Klingons that, yes, they're the sort of people who have to sometimes fight Satan.

But if their intent had just been to create an entirely separate universe, there would've been no need for all that convoluted time-travel stuff in the first place. The only reason they chose to do it that way was because they wanted it to be a continuation from previous Trek as well as a new beginning, hence having Spock Prime come back from a few years after Nemesis. If they hadn't felt the need to maintain a connection with the original timeline, we wouldn't have gotten this story at all. They would've just done a straight origin story for the Enterprise crew and had them face a villain with some other motivation. Which, frankly, I would've preferred.
