Why don't novels have numbers anymore?

The full checklist was dropped because it took up more and more pages every few months, was a daunting list of (many) out-of-print books and was spooking new customers.

Most new series books DO have a relevant checklist of recent titles.

Memory Beta is the place for a readily-updated/easily-correctable book list. And we already have that.

That TOS checklist was the truly daunting one for me. I basically had decided to refrain from getting the TOS books just because I couldn't get them all. Fortunately (well, not so fortunate for my wallet...), I had a family member who found three boxes of Trek books at a garage sale containing them and bought them for me (three bucks for all three boxes!).

I don't know about other people, but whenever I want to start a new book series, I usually just look them up on the internet to find out which order to read them. And in the case of things like Star Trek it's usually very easy to find a list somewhere on the internet.

Amen.

Then, of course, there's the handy dandy "Voyages of Imagination" by Jeff Ayers. I have three copies: one on the shelf in the Star Trek shrine, in mint condition, one near the computer and one I recently found (on clearance?) for $AU 10 and couldn't allow to just sit there.

I wonder... does the site have a print-ready check-off checklist for the various book series? If not, that would be a great addition.

My husband found this really neat program for tracking our comic books where you can track series, so when you get a new issue you can check it off out of the software. The software does all the work of tracking down lists of back issues and such. I'll have to get him to post the name of the program. I think it's shareware.

Something like that for books would be totally awesome. I wish I knew how to make one. You'd all buy it, and I'd have money for a change. :)

Cut/paste your own into Word?

Someone would have to upload a new version every month, and it would always be missing something that someone else deems important, or it would have the wrong order for people's tastes.

There have been readers here offering their Excel spreadsheets, etc, every now and then. But if you're a listy type person, you'll never be happy with some other listy's efforts!

No, but all (or at least most) of the lists are up to date, so you could just print them and then mark off the books you have.

Given the loose (to put it mildly) continuity in "Trek"-books, I think numbering most of them while the TV shows were going was fairly pointless.

Presently, however, the books that have taken up the reins of TOS, TNG, VOY, DS9 and ENT would benefit from numbering, as would "New Frontier". They're all part of an ongoing, continuity-consistent series now.

At the same time, new readers might not want to pick up "Enterprise: Book Three - Kobayashi Maru", but are more willing to buy the book if it appears to be a standalone. It can certainly be enjoyed on its own, although reading "Last Full Measure" and "The Good That Men Do" makes the experience richer.

I've often felt that the Shatnerverse books would benefit from being numbered; I can never remember what order "Captain's Peril", "Captain's Blood" and "Captain's Glory" come in. I may even have gotten it wrong here.

There are two sites for lists that I use....

This one is like the one that used to be printed in the books. http://www.psiphi.org/cgi/upc-db/booklist.html

And this one is VotI's list kept up-to-date. http://www.geocities.com/cwinifred/Timeline.htm
Just a quick note. The book list is up-to-date as of Greater Than the Sum.
