Why Does The Satellite In Trek V Scream?

It's not a Wilhelm in Star Trek V. There is a Wilhelm in "The Director's Edition" of Star Trek - The Motion Picture.

Ah Christ. It was a little audio joke. What's the bfd?
I don't think it's even a joke. It's just some creative audio mixing for a desired audience reaction.

Same as the odd wheezing/breathing sound that the ring makes in Lord of the Rings when it's chucked into the fire. Gives it a little subtle life and humanity.

I always assumed the scream was part of the soundtrack, not meant to be coming from the probe at all. Just an audio accent to convey a feeling to the audience.

(The same way the Klingon/BOP theme has the cry of a bird of prey in it. We're not meant to think the ship is making the cry.)

Is there music at that point in the film? Does anyone know if the sound is on the score CD?

I dunno. Why does the Pope shit in the woods? Or is that...is the bear Catholic. I forget which.

Every time I hear the wilhelm sound effect now, I'm going to be bounced out of the movie.

Damn you, Ben Burtt!!!

I always assumed it was just part of the soundtrack/score. Like in action or horror movies where the music includes someone hitting a metal object with a hammer. Like in the first Matrix movie ending chase scene.

A wise man would ask, "If a satellite screams in space, would it make a sound?"
