Why does it seem Star Trek has not really taken off in France?

I can't imagine the French were too big on giving a man who grew up in a French vineyard an English accent, either.

Also, Jerry Lewis.

This. The French probably didn't like a Brit playing a Frenchman.

They are obviously repulsed by the idea that Great Britain takes over France sometime in the future (politically and/or culturally). It's the equivalent of a futuristic American starship captain talking in a German accent.

No idea about the French but I sure do like their fries. Oh wait never mind - those are freedom fries aren't they ?

Actually, they're Belgian fries, not French. ;)

That's correct; I never understood why they are called french fries in the States, since they were invented right here in Belgium.

As to why Star Trek has not taken off in France, I guess one reason has a lot to do with French chauvinism, and another reason is that the show loses something in the translation (hey, they even change the themesong of many American tv-series. You should hear what they did to Dallas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=badRuS2emc0 ).

Before you click on the link, I must warn you : the french dallas-theme sounds really, really awful!

I think it's because they originally had a French name, just like here in Germany.

 That's great.

Ah, I didn't realize that it wasn't even shown there until '82. That certainly makes sense. Thanks, Steve Roby, for the info and the bit from the French wiki.
