Why does Abrams keeps giving the middle finger to Trek fans?

Of course! When any journalist asks JJ for an interview, he should smirk and say, "No comment. Ever."
I would LOVE to see the reaction to that. :)

"See, JJ doesn't even care enough to comment! How can he be the one to resurrect the franchise?!"

"If JJ doesn't care enough to comment, he doesn't care about canon!"

"JJ is so stupid he probably doesn't even know what to say!"

etc. etc.

That poll was bullshit. If "6 out of 10" people considered themselves "Star Trek fans" then we wouldn't be in this drought right now with no new Trek in almost 4 years. If 60% of people actually liked Star Trek then there would've have been more than enough people watching to keep Trek alive.

A similar poll was mentioned in a volume of "The Best of Trek". At the height of TNG's popularity, their "man in the street poll" had a similar result. Many average Americans considered themselves as fans of Star Trek, in that if an episode came on TV they'd watch it, and were not embarrassed by it. Similarly, TOS in prime time syndication during the 70s built up a huge, curious fanbase. That's not to say they were all completists, or fanatics.

They are the people, the more casual ST fans, who are tempted to spend money to see ST IV or "First Contact" at the movies, or to pick up a licensed ST fact book (Pocket hasn't been able to shift enough fact books to satisfy the accountants at Simon & Schuster ever since "First Contact"). Most of these casual fans have been blissfully otherwise engaged with other pursuits ever since - but they are in a new demographic now and many of them, plus their children, will attend ST XI out of curiosity and/or nostalgia.

The movie hasn't been released and everyone is uptight and nit picking over nothing. I consider myself a hard core fan and have been since the first TOS aired back in the 60's.
The franchise has to get a new start or it will eventually fade out.
The same crap happened when TNG came out and it ended up being great.
Star Trek has to appeal to a new generation to survive.
I predict there will be alot of history revealed in this new movie.
History that was hinted at but never revealed in detail.
I am just glad that there is a new movie and hopefully a new series will ensue.
Thank you for your optimism.

It is a breath of fresh air hearing that in here. :)

Yeah he could change the material. Even when he first spoke at comic con about actually directing Star Trek he said he's always been more of a star wars fan than a Star Trek fan, to the cheers of the Star Wars.

Not enough.
i dont agree. i saw a poll a couple of years ago that stated that 6 out of 10 americans considered themselves star trek fans.thats a huge fan base. the problem i feel has been the product that has been put out there.make a great movie and people will go and see it. its as simple as that.

bullshit according to you!there has been no trek for the last few years because of the lack of quality stories shows like enterprise gave us. put out an entertaining , exiting show with new ideas and people will watch it!

“We weren’t making a movie for fans of Star Trek. We were making a movie for fans of movies.”

Because given the performance of star trek movies and TV shows in the last 15 years, movie fans have been giving the middle finger to Star Trek. It's time to speak to them and let them know it's ok to walk into a trek movie again. In addition, 21st century shows Star Trek Nemesis' performance of selling a total of 5 million movie tickets and Enterprise fighting to get 2 million people to watch for free.

First Contact was the most successful trek movie and that made 146 million worldwide in 1996 which was below iconic movies such as Space Jam, The Nutty Professor, and Romeo and Juliet. It's even worse that Mission Impossible made 457 million that year. Today we are seeing a reboot of Batman making money (371 million for Begins, 995 million for TDK), Transformers making 700 million, Indiana Jones do 786, Bond make 300 so far after Casino's Royale's 600 million, Superman 391 million, even MI:3 made 398 million.

Given the high costs of Science fiction effects (and modern movies in general), if Star Trek movies... specifically this one and a sequel... can only make 150 million each worldwide, they do not need to be made. So that means we bite our tongues in public as abrams. As Chancellor Azebur said "We are a proud race, and we intend to go on being proud."

She said this before signing a treaty that (had to) hurt the empire in relative pride and power but saved the empire from extinction and eventually made it so strong that, if not for the Enterprise C's sacrifice, they would have conquered the same Federation that they once asked for food rations in 80 years.

In the same way, we are going to be ridiculed for our continued loyalty so that a crowd that never got into trek (or fell away) can see our trek for their time and eventually return Trek to the pop culture where it used to live.

And that's just what he's doing. J.J.'s bringing something that will most likely be entertaining, exciting and with new ideas, and we're hoping people will watch it. I'll be there opening night. Will you?

I don't suppose that you have any explanation for the fact that not a single episode of "Star Trek," ever, nor any airing of any "Star Trek" movie, has ever captured anything approaching 60% of the television audience?

Didn't think so.

Why does Abrams keeps giving the middle finger to Trek fans?

Because nothing else works?

A poll from almost 20 years ago...in TNG's peak...is not "a couple of years ago".

Why does Abrams keeps giving the middle finger to Trek fans?
Because nothing else works?

Hell, after seeing the reaction of a some of "fans", the finger isn't all they deserve.

Here are a few questions that might have made such a poll useful, even then:

1) How many hours of "Star Trek" do you recall watching on television in the last three months? Six months? One year?

2) What was the last piece of "Star Trek" merchandise you purchased?

3) How many "Star Trek" films have you purchased tickets to see in a theater?

You know, if Hershey were doing a marketing survey and the only question their people asked was "do you like chocolate?" they'd have pissed their money away pretty uselessly.
