Why do you love Voyager?

I like all the Reg Barclay stories, and it's a pleasure to see him introduced in that one.

^ Yay, someone else who loves "Projections"! I'm telling you, it doesn't get enough love around here. :(
Well, it gets mine. :)

It's a Doctor episode. It's got Reg Barclay. It's Braga doing the kind of mind-bending "Frame of Mind" stuff that is really his strongest suit as a writer. Is there a reason we shouldn't love it?

It's just that usually when people list their top episodes around here it never gets mentioned and undeservedly falls between the cracks! It's one of my very few 10/10 rated Voyager episodes.

Yeah, it does.

I think because future eps. featuring the Doc. stand out more, many of the EMH's earily eps. or comments get forgotten. :(

My favorite scene is where Barclay slaps him and the shocked: "How Dare You!" reply, cracks me up every time. :guffaw:

Robert Picardo is golden, yo!

And it reminds me of the Buffy episode where she thinks she's actually a mental patient who is dreaming up all the slayer stuff.

"Elogium" was just playing, and I had to laugh to hear Tuvok declaring, "It appears we have lost our sex appeal, Captain!"

I think this is the episode which introduces Ensign Wilder, and she reveals her pregnancy to the captain. Together with the Doctor, Kes, Neelix and Tuvok discussing parenthood, this episode had a nice theme. In addition, there was also the idea introduced that the crew might have to have children and Voyager be a generational ship.

I like it because it does not take itself so seriously.
It is a fun show...who cares if it is inconsistant, or if the acting is a bit uneven. In the end it is a fun hour of television. You cannot say that that of much of the crap out there.

I don't love it, I like it. What I most enjoyed were the characters and the dynamics between them. They often raised the bar when the writing failed.

Thanks for that insightful contribution to the topic. :bolian:

Voyager fulfils - in spades, and as no other Trek series does - my primary criterion for liking a TV show: Likeable, enjoyable, interesting characters in whom I took an interest from day one. If I can't get interested in the characters in a show, I can't get interested in what they do. That was never a problem for me with Voyager.

What, you can't imagize on this board or something? :thumbs down:

THE_FETT, ya shouldn't hotlink, anyway.

The Fett, new members have to reach 50 (or is it 100) posts before they can post pictures. You'll be there in no time probably.

I'm not sure I "love" Voyager - though since I finally am spending the money for the DVDs (I resisted until they came down in price as they recently have) I'm still taking the series as a whole in (before now I've only caught probably half or so of it on TV airings). But I definitely enjoy it - the proper word is charmed I think.

The elements I most enjoy about it:
1. The central performance of Kate Mulgrew. The character was complex, and sometimes the writing was erratic (Janeway would be...at times...whatever the story demanded of her), but the fact is...Kate Mulgrew and the Janeway character anchor the story solidly...and she never overacted in the way Avery Brooks did from time to time. Her performance was solid, and her character deserves her due in the pantheon of Trek captains (I've been disappointed at her relatively minor role in the TNG relaunch...she could be put to better use than as a nagging admiral).

2. The cast in general. A strong cast and good characters. Even Neelix...a brunt of complaint for many Voyager haters...was solidly portrayed, with Ethan Philip's performance never as annoying - IMO - as some detractors have claimed. In fact...he charmed me from the moment in Caretaker when he addressed Tuvok as Lt. Vulcan.

3. While it is true that the overall Voyager arc - or lack of one - is disappointing, the fact is that Voyager produced a number of outstanding episodes that stand as some of Trek's best. Caretaker is...IMO...Trek's best pilot, and there are any number of great entries (Deadlock, Year Of Hell, Scorpion, Unity, Faces, Timeless, Death Wish, Living Witness, etc) that stand alongside Trek's best episodes.

Put a little more simply and clearly...I think Voyager gets a bad rap, so to speak. While it did have it's weaknesses, I watch it as Trek alongside TNG and DS9 with no problem. The same spirit of Gene Roddenberry's original can still be found in it...and it produced some fantastic hours of television.

I have a love-hate thing going on with Voyager; mostly love.

- The cast is probably the best all-round assembled group of actors in the entirety of Trek. Not a bad actor in the whole lot. You could dislike certain characters, but that's only because of writing. The actors, generally, did the best with what they got.

- The characters were pretty damn interesting too.

- The concept was great. I won't go into its execution.

- When Voyager was written well, it was memorably great stuff. Living Witness, Projections, Drone, Scorpion, Timeless, Death Wish, Real Life, Barge Of The Dead; I could on.

- Threshold is the most hilariously watchable bad episode of Trek ever.

It would be easier to say what I *didn't* like about Voyager; I've never understood why people don't like it. The main actors seemed to have more interpersonal chemistry, and episodes about character development worked really well, in my opinion.

1) The Doctor's interactions with Seven
2) Tom's interactions with Torres
3) Nemesis, Day of Honor, Year of Hell, Scorpion, to name a few.

"Love" is too strong. But---

First, Kate Mulgrew.

Second, unlike Data who was deadly serious (and that ruined TNG for me,) EMH was tongue in cheek most of the time.

Third, Seven of Nine didn't unreservedly lust for humanity.

Fourth, I liked Kim, Tuvok, Neelix, Chakotay.

Fifth, Jennifer Lien's voice was beautiful.

Sixth, no idiotic "arcs" that didn't actually make any sense and dragged stuff out.

Seventh, but I guess most important, some of the episodes were terrific.
